Federal drug enforcement agents raided a Sacramento medical marijuana dispensary Wednesday morning.
River City Patient Center on the 1500 block of El Camino Avenue has been under investigation for more than a year, according to the Drug Enforcement Agency. Federal law considers marijuana an illegal drug while state law allows marijuana for medicinal purposes.
Agents told News10 they recovered processed marijuana and growing marijuana plants at the center. The DEA also said it is serving search warrants at the Acampo residence of one of the center’s owners and at a farm in Calaveras County which is allegedly growing the drug for the center.
Clients of the center were upset by the raid.
"If I would've known that then I wouldn't be spending the money on buying our (medical marijuana prescription) cards because we're on Social Security," said customer Gina Brotherton. "So that's not even cool because they're wasting our money."
Doug Oughton from a neighboring business wasn’t surprised by the turn of events.
"It's a small percentage (of customers with legitimate illnesses). They come in, you can tell they’re ill," Oughton said.
News10: "But then there are others?"
"I would say 90 percent are your college age," Oughton replied.
Within two hours of the bust, center clients and medical marijuana advocates were protesting outside the building.
Agents have not released the name(s) of the center's owners or how much marijuana was seized.
River City Patient Center opened in 2004.
