DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Radio personality D.J. Grooverider has been sentenced to four years in a Dubai prison after admitting he brought marijuana into the United Arab Emirates.
Grooverider, whose real name is Raymond Bingham, was convicted Monday and was given the country's minimum sentence for drug possession, The Times of London reported Tuesday.
"The drugs were in my possession and I forgot I had them in my trousers," Bingham told the court during a previous hearing in the case.
Bingham, 40, is a recording artist and co-host of the weekly BBC Radio 1 program "Fabio and Grooverider."
He was arrested at Dubai airport Nov. 23 with 2.16 grams of marijuana in his pockets, the British newspaper said.
"I just want this to end and to never come back. It was a small amount. Back home I would not even get prosecuted," Bingham said from jail in a previously published interview.
