This article is about the philosophy. For the film, see Pay It Forward (film).
The expression "pay it forward" is used to describe the concept of asking that a good turn be repaid by having it done to others instead. In contract law, typically there are two parties but there is the concept of third party beneficiaries. Pay it forward merely applies this contract law concept so that third party beneficiary be a stranger to the creditor (or obligee). More specifically, the creditor (obligee) offers the debtor (obligor) the option of "paying" the debt forward by lending it to a third person instead of paying it back to the original creditor. Debt and payments can be monetary or by good deeds. In sociology, this concept is called "generalized reciprocity" or "generalized exchange". A related transaction, which starts with a gift instead of a loan, is alternative giving.
I do not pretend to give such a Sum; I only lend it to you. When you [...] meet with another honest Man in similar Distress, you must pay me by lending this Sum to him; enjoining him to discharge the Debt by a like operation, when he shall be able, and shall meet with another opportunity. I hope it may thus go thro' many hands, before it meets with a Knave that will stop its Progress. This is a trick of mine for doing a deal of good with a little money.
Ralph Waldo Emerson, in his essay "Compensation", wrote: "In the order of nature we cannot render benefits to those from whom we receive them, or only seldom. But the benefit we receive must be rendered again, line for line, deed for deed, cent for cent, to somebody."
Lily Hardy Hammond wrote, "You don't pay love back; you pay it forward."[1]
Wayne Woodrow “Woody” Hayes (February 14, 1913 –March 12, 1987) was a college football coach who is best remembered for winning five national titles and 13 Big Ten championships in 28 years at Ohio State University. He misquoted Emerson as having said "You can pay back only seldom. You can always pay forward, and you must pay line for line, deed for deed, and cent for cent." He also shortened the (mis)quotation into "You can never pay back; but you can always pay forward" and variants.
An anonymous spokesman for Alcoholics Anonymous said in the Christian Science Monitor in 1944, "You can't pay anyone back for what has happened to you, so you try to find someone you can pay forward."[2]
The term "pay it forward" was popularized, by Robert A. Heinlein in his book Between Planets, published in 1951:
The banker reached into the folds of his gown, pulled out a single credit note. "But eat first — a full belly steadies the judgment. Do me the honor of accepting this as our welcome to the newcomer."
His pride said no; his stomach said YES! Don took it and said, "Uh, thanks! That's awfully kind of you. I'll pay it back, first chance."
"Instead, pay it forward to some other brother who needs it."
Heinlein both preached and practiced this philosophy; now the Heinlein Society, a humanitarian organization founded in his name, does so. Author Spider Robinson made repeated reference to the doctrine, attributing it to his spiritual mentor Heinlein.[3]
The mathematician Paul Erdos, in one of his visits to Harvard University, met a promising math student on the verge of expulsion for inability to pay his tuition. Erdos paid the young man's tuition in full. Years later, the man offered to return the entire amount to Erdos, but Erdos insisted that the man rather find another student in his situation, and give the tuition to him. [4]
In 2000, Catherine Ryan Hyde's novel Pay It Forward was published and adapted into a Warner Brothers film, Pay It Forward. In Ryan Hyde's book and movie it is described as an obligation to do three good deeds for others in repayment of a good deed that one receives. Such good deeds should be things that the other person cannot accomplish on their own. In this way, the need to help one another can spread exponentially through society, creating a social movement with the goal of making the world a better place.
The idea of the book has been championed in real life by the Pay It Forward Foundation. The Foundation focuses on bringing the idea of paying it forward to school age children, parents, and educators. The simple idea of doing good works for others to repay the good that has happened to you is one that can easily be conveyed to children and encourages them to be socially aware and take a role in making the world a better place.[citation needed] The main character of the book was a 12-year-old child, thus giving other children someone they can relate to.
In 2004, a small group of University of Minnesota students, wanting to find a way for students to do ordinary things to improve their world, created the student group Students Today Leaders Forever (STLF). The main event for STLF is the annual "Pay It Forward" tour, where college students spend their Spring Break on a bus trip to several cities doing community service projects, with the idea that those served will "pay it forward" and benefit their communities.[5]
In October 2005, Syracuse University's Residence Hall Association began a Pay It Forward campaign on campus. It spread on campus rapidly, and was noted for entering mainstream Syracuse society as a result.[citation needed] Many other schools have begun such campaigns.
On October 26, 2006 Oprah gave her audience a challenge to Pay it Forward, giving 300 audience guests $1,000 USD on a debit card and a camcorder to record the acts of kindness they did. The rules of the challenge were very specific, the money had to be spent within one week and could only be used to help charitable organizations or an individual person but not a relative.
The Book and Movie:

It all started with the social studies teacher''s extra-credit assignment: come up with a plan to change the world for the better, and do it. Twelve-year-old Trevor McKinney began by doing something good for three people. But instead of paying him back, he asked them to "pay it forward" by doing a favor for three more people, who in turn would help three others, and so on, each act a link in a chain of human kindness. And no one -- not his teacher, his mom, or anyone in his small California town -- could ever have dreamed of how far Trevor''s plan would go.
Catherine Ryan Hyde is the author of the critically acclaimed novel Funerals for Horses and numerous short stories, including the collection Earthquake Weather. She lives in Cambria, California.
Life imitating artThe idea of the book and film has been brought to life by the Pay It Forward Foundation, and through the work of social activistJane Tewson and the non-profit organization she founded Timebank. It is also possible that the book was inspired by Lloyd C. Douglas' popular depression era novel, Magnificent Obsession about a doctor who starts a secretive good deeds movement with the catchphrase, "I've already used it all up myself."
Even Haley Joel Osment appears in an ad that aspires the idea.
“Pay It Forward” is a book written by Catherine Ryan Hyde, but it's also an idea. It's an action plan within a work of fiction. But does it have to be fiction? We're hoping not. In fact, since the book was released in January of 2000, a real-life social movement has emerged, not just in the U.S. but worldwide. What began as a work of fiction has already become much more.
WHAT IS THE PAY IT FORWARD FOUNDATION?The Pay It Forward Foundation was established in September 2000 by author Catherine Ryan Hyde and others to educate and inspire students to realize that they can change the world, and provide them with opportunities to do so. By bringing the author's vision and related materials into classrooms internationally, students and their teachers are encouraged to formulate their own ideas of how they can pay it forward.
I think Its a wonderful IDEA and I try to follow it as much as possible! I am soo grateful and blessed for so many things in my life, I really try to pass some of those blessings on. Its fun for me too to try to be creative and come up with new ways to show the people around me that I care!
Having to be SOOO SECRETIVE about my grow has left me feeling GUILTY more than once. I have a whole slew of family and friends who work hard and live week to week with their paydays. They budget in the $ for smoke, and that don't leave em with much left over. Smoking is great, but in times of recession, you need to cut back- and unfortunately this is 1 of the areas hit the hardest! As you already know J, my dad and I have came up with a way to get my sister in on all this knowledge & Know How with out exposing our own hobby. My sister knew my Dad used to grow, so I have to use him 100% for the source- So she will not even know I am helping her out as well- But that don't matter, at least she'll be getting some help! We are making her a small Rubbermaid type CFL Mini Grow Box. It should house 2 plants comfortably, and were hoping she can yield aprox 2-3 oz at a time from it. 2-3 oz to you or me might seem like an AWFULLY SMALL harvest, but to someone who can only afford small amounts per week, this means they will save allot of $ through-out the month! It also means she will be capable of growing her own meds. With a lil' experience she will be able to get a set-up that will grow her enough meds till next harvest. I already have her 2 clones vegging, and I will be switching them to flower soon. By the time Christmas comes and she gets her gift, if will contain 2 plants ready for harvest! IMAGINE THAT- Your first grow ever, and you are GIFTED two budding plants! SHE WILL BE BROUGHT TO TEARS! I benefit too, as I will get to watch hers flower under CFL's and get to compare the same strain under HPS. A learning experience for me too. Now I get to PAY IT FORWARD and NOT reveal my own experiences! HOW GREAT IS THAT!
SO, WHAT DO YA SAY... ANYONE ELSE WANT TO JOIN ME THIS YEAR IN PAYING IT FORWARD? I'm sure we ALL know at least 1 person that smokes and can not afford to get what they need, or have the know-how to get their own grow started. There are TONS of info on small cfl boxs, and it will only cost aprox $60-$75 to get it together- and FOREVER CHANGE A PATIENTS NEEDS! You could start them a few plants in soil, or a hempy bucket- and explain to em what you did. I plan on putting together a notebook of sort explaining to my sister everything from PH, to lighting, to clipping off her buds.
and she kept saying she wanted to start growing and she was gonna plant some seeds one of these days. So, one day when she was here, I got some pots and some seeds and some weak nutes and planted some seeds with her right then and there. It was the right time of year where she could grow a couple of plants to fruition right in front of her south facing window. The plants didn't live, but we will get her started eventually.. She needs the encouragement as much as the seeds and materials.
I have found that growing help to heal as much as using does. So, I am looking forward to helping her having a successful grow even if it's just one plant to start out with..
To a patient in need, 1 plant can be life changing! Dont look at it like -Just 1 plant. You are gonna be giving her knowledge that is PRICELESS! She will have the knowledge and know-how to grow her own meds from now on! It may be just 1 plant to us, but to a patient in need- Its a LIFE CHANGING, EYE OPENING Experience! Don't EVER under estimate the power of PAYING IT FORWARD!
A gift like this don't happen EVERYDAY! As minor of a thing as it is to us, isnt it AMAZING what it will mean to someone else? The BEST thing about all this is- PAYING IT FORWARD! We are not asking my sister for anything in return- EXCEPT that 1 day, she returns the favor to someone else in need! Dad is going to set a goal for her- By NEXT Christmas, she will be experienced enough to pass this on to the next patient in need! If shes anything like me, by next Christmas she will be growing, and cloning, and want her own veg space. If thats the case, she can KEEP her box, and make a new one for someone else! So, you see- By helping just 1 person, with 1 plant- You can be FOREVER changing the lives and happiness of MANY!

I say, just one, because she panics and gets overwhelmed very easily. I think one plant will be less intimitating for her to start out with. Although, if I get her to try three again, she'd have a better chance of success. it is the confidence she needs more than anything. Once she sees that she can be successful and she actually is able to smoke bud that she grew herself, that is the true gift! Once she understands that it is doable and wonderful she will be inspired to do more and to share with other's what she has learned. right now, she goes for weeks without medicating because times are tuff and she needs to be high every day to function well with this illness. She could do one plant by a window, under one regular light bulb, in soil with a seed and some potting mix. I will keep trying to encourage her. Where there's a will, there's always a way.
So give her 1 thats already on its way to finishing. Maybe start her a plant at your place, get it going and budding- Then give it to her. Less likely she will kill it if she sees them crystally buds all over it! Talk about a confidence booster! Getting a plant in bud, and all you have to do is keep it alive for a few more weeks! She will be AMAZED at what you gifted her, and even more amazed if she can keep it alive and thriving on her window sill. The possibility of doing this seems like such a long shot for her- she probably cant even see the end. Give her 1 thats at its end, and show her what she can do by her self next time! Give her a few notes on where you at with it, and what she will need to continue to do. Giving her something like that, that will be ready in a few weeks lets someone see that this dream is a reality, and THEY can make it happen. Its like getting rewarded b4 you do any of the work- Sometimes it could make em work harder as they will KNOW of the reward to follow. For someone who has never got a plant to bud, it seems like unrealistic. Give em a plant with buds, and they will see what they need to do to make this happen again! (Just a thought)

i had over 10 plants get to 3+ feet tall in potting soil from the nursery, a little miracle grow food now and then and no ph. up here it is not hard at all to grow a plant by the windowsill, but it's not the right season, right now. She would need to put it under a light bulb. One light bulb would do one plant just fine with extra light from the window during the day. and there is something about watching the little seedling pop up and reach for the light that is comforting and inspiring. i think the least equipment and complications at this point will be best for her.
i had a heck of a time just trying to get her to drop the seed in the pot, she was so nervous and anxious..

i had a heck of a time just trying to get her to drop the seed in the pot, she was so nervous and anxious..
got her talked into coming back over and sicking 3 seeds in a pot so she can try again. i asked her a few questions on what was going on when the last one died, and she got so intense about, "I did everything exactly as you said!" I told her that I buried a whole lot of bagseeds b4 I was sucessful with getting a healthy seedling that grew into a healthy plant. That it takes practice to get the hang of it. She sounded so surprised! I told her, I still kill plants and that Edison failed hundreds of times b4 he got the light bulb right, so stop beating yourself up. So, she's willing to give it another try..
this time im going to send her home with a bottle of mild nutes to get her started. her last little seedling probably just starved.
Now she's probably drifting off to dreamland picturing her little lady on the window sill.
Put her together a lil basket of goodies to take home, a lite mix of nutes (with dosing instructions of coarse ), and a CFL Bulb or 2, maybe a few extra bag seeds, and you have yourself a Gift Basket!
Do you clone? If so, snip her a clone to start(and maybe an extra 1 in case things go BAD?)... If not, SHOULDNT YOU BE?(I know Im Talkin SMACK- Ive only cloned 2xs now, and already I think its the easiest thing ever, that EVERY grower should be doin) I MIGHT be jumping the gun on that 1 I've only had my 1st set root so far I am just amazed at how easy it was to do, and how easy it was to make a small box with a few cfl bulbs- Im even more amazed at how flipping good these clones and seedlings have vegged out in there. EVERYONE SHOULD DO IT! I am Cloning Queen now,and have about 8 clones rooting and dont really know what to do with em? I did it just for practice (And cuz my seedlings were soooo bushy at the bottoms) but now....Im trying to get creative Its HARD though when NO-ONE KNOWS your secret?

right now is a few seeds, some potting mix, a bottle of mild nutes. ill have her bring the buckets we used for her last time. i will write some instructions down for her, i think i did last time as well, but im not sure. it's always been part of our intention to offer garden set up as one of our services. tet has helped several of our patients get started!
ive done a few clones on my own, and we've done them together quite a few times. we've gone thru several methods this year and are having the best luck with the rubbermaid bins. tet does most of them, tho. a very handy partner he is!
oh, and go ahead and talk smack
i can take it! lol
Glad to hear that desert- (cuz I tend to talk some smack every now and then) ALL WITH GOOD INTENTIONS (more smack talk )
Im not sure exactly what "you Do" but it sounds like whatever it is, you have the patients best interests at heart! That is special! I cant even IMAGINE how AWESOME it wouldve been to have someone come in and say Look What YOU can Do! Me and Hubs struggled "on the Bag' for 15 yrs b4 we ever leaped into this venture! It always seems so scary, so UNREALISTIC! Everytime we looked at picts in magazines, the grow room looked SO COMPLEX, so many wires, so many gadgets, SO CONFUSING! We talked ourself into it a few times b4, but ALWAYS found an excuse to chicken out. We were SO MIS-INFORMED on personal growing it wasnt even funny! We had NO clue on anything- From lighting, to set up, to ventilation, everytime we pondered the idea, we got lost before it made any sence. Had I known all this 10 yrs, ago... OOOHHHH The $ we couldve saved! It took ALOT of all night reading and research for me to get the confidence to invest this $ into a grow. Had someone ever offered to show me what I could accomplish with a few CFL's I wouldve probably been forever indebted to them! Even after deciding I was going to save up ALL my extra$ and surprise Hubs with it, I changed my mind a few times- as I just NEVER thought I could do it! I can't imagine HOW MUCH EASIER this journey would have been had I had 1 person in the real world be able to get me started! OOOHH WHAT THATS WORTH- PRICELESS!
