| I just heard this and thought it should be published here also.. Want to take bets on how long before they outlaw those plants... The biblical Israelites may have been high on a hallucinogenic plant when Moses brought the Ten Commandments down from Mount Sinai, according to a new study by an Israeli psychology professor. Writing in the British journal Time and Mind, Benny Shanon of Jerusalem's Hebrew University said two plants in the Sinai desert contain the same psychoactive molecules as those found in plants from which the powerful Amazonian hallucinogenic brew ayahuasca is prepared. The thunder, lightning and blaring of a trumpet which the Book of Exodus says emanated from Mount Sinai could just have been the imaginings of a people in an "altered state of awareness", Shanon hypothesised. "In advanced forms of ayahuasca inebriation, the seeing of light is accompanied by profound religious and spiritual feelings," Shanon wrote. "On such occasions, one often feels that in seeing the light, one is encountering the ground of all Being ... many identify this power as God." Shanon wrote that he was very familiar with the affects of the ayahuasca plant, having "partaken of the ... brew about 160 times in various locales and contexts". He said one of the psychoactive plants, harmal, found in the Sinai and elsewhere in the Middle East, has long been regarded by Jews in the region as having magical and curative powers. Some biblical scholars were unimpressed. Orthodox rabbi Yuval Sherlow told Israel Radio: "The Bible is trying to convey a very profound event. We have to fear not for the fate of the biblical Moses, but for the fate of science." REUTERS Last edited by jonnyappleweed; 03-05-2008 at 09:59 PM. | ||||||||

| I have thought, for a long time, that the biblical prophets were halucinating. Go into the desert, not much water, not much food, and eat what you find there, chances are you just may have "visions" of whatever. And, what about Moses. He had all these people with him, "wandering in the wilderness, for 40 years." You could walk across the whole middle east, in much less time than 40 years. Doesn't seem like someone I'd want to follow.

| Johnny, I think some of those Rabbinical "scholars" had to be toking some serious Afghan to come up with that kind of far-fetched interpretation...but I guess anything's possible! Read though Isiah Chapter 47 (in a KJV Bible, or online in one (it's more dramatic). God had a serious issue with anything magical. Isa 47:9But these two [things] shall come to thee in a moment in one day, the loss of children, and widowhood: they shall come upon thee in their perfection for the multitude of thy sorceries, [and] for the great abundance of thine enchantments. Second problem is that all the things that God told Moses on Mt. Sinai were accurate and came true according to later books of the Bible. Moses was considered responsible for writing the first 5 books of the Bible (Pentateuch), but he was also raised as an Egyptian and schooled by the Egyptians, yet, they have never found any Biblical texts in Egyptian! (it is commmonly accepted that *none* of the actual "Originals" remain.) Interesting theory, for sure...thanks for sharing it! ISO
