There are many kinds of people doing this with all sorts of reasons and techniques. I have read just about every post on this site (I know it is kinda sick) and I’ve come up with some principles that help me decide, What kind of grower am I?
  • There are generalist and specialist growers. Generalists grow many strains utilizing different techniques and grow their knowledge of this craft much more broadly. Specialists grow one or two strains only and go deep with their knowledge. They become experts on their specific strains and techniques.
  • Growers fall in love with certain strains and stick with it for a while. To become an “Artisan” you have to fall in love with your craft. I’ve fallen for Shiva. I love how it smells (spicy) and how it looks with its dark green leaves.
  • Production comes with experience. It’s better to grow fewer plants well than to grow several plants poorly. I have two modest flower rooms and a veg room. Quality first, growing a strain in separate flowering rooms allows me to “dial-in” my nutes and environmental factors to the specific strains.
  • Think before you act. Even the most experienced grower plan their grow. GP is a great forum to test your thinking with others who only wish you success. Pictures and drawings will help others assist you.
  • Learning is incremental and unfortunately we learn best from out mistakes. So make a few and learn something new.
  • DIY or buy new? IMHO there are two types of people in the world. Those who look as something they need and say to themselves “where can I buy that?” and those who say to themselves “how can I make that? If you can afford to buy a bunch of stuff go for it, but as many folks here have proven “home-made” is just as good or better. I fall into the first group but I have made Videoman’s “Odor Neutralizing Machine”, Fred’s“flip-flop” and added 4 more buckets to my waterfarm using the kits. So I’m not totally inept.
  • Am I part of this community? This is really up to each of us. I can be a member within GP or a part of GP. This means I can register come in and read all about it, but never inject myself into the conversation. This approach is nether good or bad it is just the way some folks are and that’s OK. Others participate more. I have done both, I still read other forums but I participate in GP. I am not the most experienced but I share what I can, a question or concern, a picture of my grow, a joke or words of encouragement to others.
  • Good technique is transferable. Indoors or out, soil or not, the five basic pillars of growing apply. Give your plants what they need when they need it and you will be rewarded.
Please feel free to add to this as you see fit.

Outstanding Post there Talisman! Excellent.

I would call myself a "Generalist" based on your supplied categories. Lots of strains and growing in every medium around. I like growing a variety for assorted flavors and effects. Depending on mood I know just which jar to open...

It also helps the board to have folks experienced in a broad base of growing styles, and we have an excellent mix here.

That is so true ISO. Those who enjoy a varity would probably grow a varity. I can see your jars all lined up like a wine cellar.

DIY or buy new?

I love this Talisman! Just super. I think there are also hybrids in there. I have bought some things and made others. Plus improvised as I learn. And it is just soooo much FUN!!!!

AND this part, Tal,

Am I part of this community? This is really up to each of us. I can be a member within GP or a part of GP. Things like this make this our home AT home or AWAY from home! It is so good to share things. Thanks Talisman for sharing with us all.

This really is an excellent post indeed, on how we grow ganja.

Personally for me, I find a little bit of each within me.
When I started growing, I grew the hell out of one strain, and learned from the differences. I've come to love and respect that strain, more than most.

I can appreciate a store bought setup, but am not above building one, if not just for the experience.

There is an old addage in growing that says, less is more. It is so true too.

No one gets to reach middle age without some baggage, myself included, and I've mellowed alot, but I'll never stop growing. I love everything about it. While smoking it is okay, I love learning about other methods to injest it, I use to love cooking with it, but now I'm hooked on freds thc pills.

I just placed an order for some more seeds as I get ready to build my new growroom:
Himalayan Gold, The Church, Feminised Cheese, Big Bang, Mazari.

Those of you who know me, know I grew a ton of mazar and this site is promoting a "mazar ripoff" the mazari. I just have to try it!

These seeds are all femenized too.
Peace

2stoned, that is how I got into this. Someone asked me if I knew where to get MJ. People all around us are either suffering or over-medicated. I lost a son to cancer MJ would not have saved him but would have improved his quality of life.

I feel like my son is with me in my grow room, asking me questions about the science behind everything. Doing this for others is helping me heal myself. I can't wait to make some of Fred's happy pills and give them to people. I'm going to sit back, wait 30 minutes and watch them relax. At the same time I will see the family start to relax.

This stuff really means something folks.
