I have a walnut tree that the squirrels planted for me, a few years ago. When I noticed it, it was about 4 feet tall, with a long branch coming out low on the trunk. Each spring, before the leaves are formed, I wind the branch around the trunk. I also wrap newer branches. The trunk is beginning to look like a 3 dimensional barber pole. I wish I would have done this to a few trees, when I was younger. I would like to see this walnut tree in about 40 years. I would also like to make some lumber from it. The grain would be quite interesting, I believe.

Hey Pappy,Yes it would make for some wild looking grain in that walnut.A turner dream. We high dollar for burls and they are hard to find.Burl is formed from stress. That could be cause by insects or a bad year or two of drought.Mother Nature makes some real nice stuff for us. Get a pix of that tree I want to see it. Peace
