Rep Power: 87 | | tattoo's and what they mean for you...
I just got a new tattoo this past friday...the 13th. My shop was running a thirteen dollar special on selected designs and this is the one I picked. Its a swallow, has significance as being a historically nautical tattoo. The swallow is the only bird, where every one of them alive, every year, fly's home to Catalina island. This had significant meaning to naval men and sailors as a symbol of always being able to find your way home. I also have a spider web on my right elbow, symbolic of a struggle... which I have certainly been in once or twice.

As a child growing up in the 50's, I was always impressed with my uncles tattoos, they were in the Navy and their tales of the exotic countries they travelled to groomed my interest in travel. Later I noticed a few neighboring farmers had tattoos, they had all served in the Navy. My mother always threatened to skin us kids alive if we ever got a tattoo, but in the next breath excused my uncles and neighbors who had them; "They we in the Navy" she would say.
The message I understood was, for travel, tattoos and a good time,,,,join the Navy. So in the early 70's when it was my time to face the draft,,, I joined the Navy.
As a joke I had a felt-tip smiley face tattoo drawn on my arm while at corpman school. Sent some pics home of me playing cards with money & whiskey on the table and cigarette in hand,,, "tattoo" in plain sight.
Well when I got home at christmas all my brothers and sisters wanted to see my tattoos. All my mother had to say was "atleast he didn't have any women in the barracks"
Well I didn't have any tattoos, didn't smoke, didn't drink whiskey, didn't gamble nor play cards. Boy did I catch hell from my mom when she found out I pulled one over on her.
The family loved it,,, for two weeks she had been storming about skinning me alive. My brothers and sisters had teased her with "but he's in the Navy". My dad was respectable quiet throughout the teasing, because I had clued him in advance, but laughed the loudest.
After nine years in the Navy, travelling to exotic lands, meeting exotic people. I came home with no tattoos. Since then my sisters have gotten tattoos, I do not think any of the brothers have tattoos.
There must be meaning there someplace.

I've got a smilin' antique sun face on my stomache so that the sun is always shining on me, a big nice compass rose on my shoulder with all north arrows because I could get lost heading to the next door neighbors house, and if you recall the indian shooting the star from the tootsie pop wrapper, he's on my side in solid black ink shooting a blue star (blue in honor of a beautiful blue eyed astronomer I know and love)

I was shot through the shoulder a few years ago so I've got a clover directly between the entrance and exit scars for "luck". He was trying to shoot me in the back of the head so I was pretty lucky, I think. Also to remember my Irish heritage. Also have a japanese character on the back of my kneck that means "warrior" cause I used to be one mean mofo and I had the slogan "victory or death" tattooed on my other shoulder in Irish (Gaelic).

no Patrong... its not me... not old enough to be be.
I've always been a fan of ink and thought this would be a cool thread, I like to see what other people have and what it means to them. I'm not a big fan of meaningless flash though, seems like every chick I know has some dumb butterfly or fairy tattoo with absolutely no meaning besides the fact that it was "cute". I personally get tattoo's more for the feeling of getting them then anything else, I like the adrenaline feeling followed by the peace of a saratonin release. I do try to get ones that mean something to me though.
