Rep Power: 53 | | Stoner thought about black holes
You know, when they show space pictures, beautiful galaxies, star clusters, and such? It seems that there is a black hole at the center of the Milky Way, and other galaxies.
So, when they show a picture of the black hole, and everything, even light, is sucked into it,... Could we swing around the outside edge of the galaxy and see the black hole? Would it look the same? Everything being sucked in, like on the other side? Or, would there be a shipload of planets, stars, and stuff, screaming out of the hole?
These are the things I think about, that keep me from advancing.

Hi Ch!
You got me thinking on this. I am unsure if changing the reference point (from where you are viewing the hole) would actually make a diff, since anything will get sucked into it, including light. Remember that this things are almost picked up not by actual images, but rather by gravitational distortions (more mass than there should be at such place). Though, I do believe it indeed possible to see the hole indistinct of the reference point (not if you are inside it, though)..
A lot's been said about what it would look like from the inside, but no, it wouldn't be planets and such screaming to be freed because as the matter approaches the hole, it will start accelerating at different ratios; Let's say you jump into it feet down, as your feet are closer to the hole, they will stretch into it more than your head would at the same moment. For this reason, anything pulled in will be distorted and eventually torn, so no chance that what will be inside will resemble how it looked on the ouside! It would be like a junkyard after passing through a blender or something like that..
Hope it helps jajaja!! nice trippin'g man!

i dont know about things being just sucked in like a vacuum cleaner with no off switch, i think its more like things spin around it held on by its gravitational pull.
after all we dont spin into the sun (yet). eventually we might. but i think we prefer to pretend that might never happen.
maybe when people understand the futility of it all and our immesureable tininess in the universe, we might consider sitting back and enjoying the ride while we can. after all, our only chance is to evolve sufficiently to get away from the supernova thats guaranteed to be on the calendar... heheheh.

Charlie,
Here's a great fact sheet on Black Holes... Blackhole Facts
From what I've come to understand, a Black Hole is like Hotel California. Planets check in, but they don't check out..
BTW, that "Milky Way" you see is the outer (or inner depending on season) spiral arm of the Milky Way Galaxy. As I understand it, the BH of our galaxy is huge, but still, finding a Earth sized black hole in space that's 50,000 light years away is a bit of a challenge. Honestly, you can lay the blame on this guy ⇨ for starting it all.

Wow! Deep thread! My brain hurts! I know, I'll smoke a couple more bowls and then I'm sure it will allll make perfect sense! Oh, did you guys hear that "The Black Hole" is politically incorrect now? JK LOL But I'm sure someone out there has been offended by it by now. A whole planet can be reduced to a marble? Or the size of an atom? Hmmm black holes...is there a "Black Holes for Dummies" out yet? Or should that be changed to "Black Holes for the IQ challenged"? Bah! I'll check back later!

Hi again!
Yes Ileso, due to the gravitational pull, anything will orbit a mass sufficiently big. The thing with this holes is that their mass is HUGE, and therefore, it tends to pull rather than creating a gentle orbit of the planets/stars/blabla around it. In fact, there is a small boundary called a horizon around black holes where nothing can scape anymore, nor will it enter inside it. Think of it as an eternal swirl around a place you don't want to get into! But if you had stepped just a bit closer, it would snap you into it with no remorse! But after all is said and done, there's no way we will end up like that... Our solar system should have something like 500.000.000 years still ahead before it collapses into it's own, creating a SuperNova..
Hope I don't swirl it all out too much!! Just trying to be informative on what I do actually remember ('cause too many things got lost from this brain of mine!!)
Peace to u all!

So, then a black hole looks the same from either side? Stuff is being sucked in from both sides? Maybe, the black hole "effect" is spherical?
OK, I've got it figured out. All the stuff entering a black hole gets rearranged and is spit out into a brand new universe. An endless beginning and ending of an infinite number of universes.
But then, the question of the very first one remains. Hmmmmmm......

Damn black holes!
CH think of it as a ball, round and nice that will suck it all up..
And yes, what you mentioned about time traveling, multiple universes and the other "me" staring back, well that's just the way the universe works, but not "proven" yet! So it'd be nice to actually do it (though those channels are called wormholes) as long as you don't fall into a black hole!
A movie I've always digged is Contact, though it isn't a very popular one.. Just to keep in mind, if you ever see it, everything that happens in the movie is actually physically possible!
Peace

The black holes are the suns brother/sister. its almost the same thing as the sun but its actually the opposite. there is another side but its the same thing. and the planets that get sucked in love it there cause there is nothing but oxygen in the air all over the new universe and hardly any gravity and people/aliens just jump from planet to planet. you can even land on the sun and as bright as it is. its not that hot. thats where most people grow there auto flowering plants because of the light and cool temps. the rest of the plants are on the many moons. our plants our on a way different light cycle over there. they have 6 hours of light of and on all day. (If you can call it a day). I'll stop before I dig myself deeper.
Good thread.

You also have to consider that anything being drawn into a black hole is going to be "atomized", ripped into the tiniest of particles by the massive gravity of the black hole.
Don't forget, as you get closer to the event horizon of a black hole, that the fabric of time/space is dramatically altered.
So, technically, you could enter a black hole in today's time, and come out at 10,000 B.C.!!
