Rep Power: 195 | | is/was it hard for you to ask for a raise
a couple of friends of mine have a really hard time asking for a raise and I was just wondering how many folks feel the same. As I was comptemplating whether or not I am, I recalled asking for a raise once, getting told no, so I sued the school district and won back wages and the raise to boot, so I guess for me that'd be a no lol!
another poll just cuz im curious and have nothing better to do tonight!

When I was employed I didn't have any issues asking for a raise. I was the only guy at the shop trained to do what I did and I did my job well. All I had to say was "either I get this raise, or I get another job". It kinda backfired at the end though, cause I was making so much money they decided I should be one of the first one's layed off and they outsourced my work for less money then they were paying me. Oh well.

What's a raise? At the high point of the construction boom here in Ohio, I was getting around $30 - $35 a hour, before 9/11. It just went downhill from there. Now, I can't even find a skilled laborer job @ min wage. The folks still employed, most I know, are not even pulling 40 hours a week. I seen a horrible statistic for Ohio, since 2002, on the DOL web site, showing every industry declining, job and wages, except healthcare and Government.

Hehe...I know...its actually been somewhat of a blessing in disguise, I suppose. I've stayed productive helping out the elders around me, but I miss that gainful employment feeling. And as you see above I blurt out rants and vent...

I havent been anyones employee for awhile now...but when I was I figured if Im making them money hand over fist then they gotta break bread...I would tell my boss I expected a raise or comission on top of my base salary if they said no...then I went elsewhere on short notice...the squeaky Wheel gets the oil =) and I've got mouths to feed.

No problem asking for a raise for myself, the problem is actually getting one. I work for Subway, who is doing really well right now, but they aren't trying to come up off any money right now. I have been stuck at the same hourly wage for over a year now, needless to say I'm lookin' for other employment.

Generally, people get paid what they think they're worth.
Believe you're worth more, and you'll usually get it -- assuming a modest degree of competence ;)
Also realize that new hires often make more than senior existing personal. So changing jobs can be the quickest route to more money... or negotiating a raise to match the most recent new hire can be a tactic to try, before jumping ship.

I would have voted. But, there's no answer that isn't either negative or over the top.
For me, it's no problem, at all. But, I certainly wouldn't sue anyone if I didn't get what I wanted. I would just start looking for someone that would pay me what I'm worth.
