Default Fathers Punishment for Teen Caught Smoking Pot

I just saw this segment on the news...

MyFox New York | Teen Wears Sign for Punishment

if that link doesnt work for the video...
This kid was caught smoking pot, so the father made him wear this sign and stand near a busy intersection to think about what he did.

At the end of the segment the boy said he learned his lesson...

YEA! DON'T GET CAUGHT SMOKING WEED!!! lololol

Just a little to extreme in my opinion. As a parent, and I'm not gonna post a long winded reply on it, but anything you do to a child, positive or negative, impacts a child, it has an effect on them, and you can't always be sure what kind of an impact it is.
So when you are making a decision regarding something such as punishment, it's best to think it through, and explain to them why they are being punished. You never discipline a child if you are upset or angry, it can interfere with your ability to make the right decision.
Also, it's a rule that the punishment should fit the crime.

Peace

Hobo and fatman both make a great point.
Anything you do to a child, either positive or negative, impacts a child, and has an effect on them is soooo true.

The other side of the coin, and in my opinion, smoking pot and sex have alot in common, from a parents point of view, atleast this parent.

You'll never stop a kid from experimenting with sex, and most probaly pot too.

If you, as a parent make a big deal out of it, than it'll be a big deal to the kid too.
Parents need to educate kids, point out the pros and cons, without treating the child as a...child, but as an up and coming adult.

I grew up in the liquor business, and liquor was everywhere, and we had absolutely no rules about it's usage either.

Everyone was allowed to drink. Did I act childish at times, of course!

Sure I kept a large closet full of beer at home, but it never became an issue either, why because it was never made into one.

I think if you give a child the responsability to behave like an adult, he will. Of course he'll still do some childish stuff, but in the end he'll come through.

One of my kids started smoking pot when he was 17, but what am I to do? Ground him? He is one year away from being a legal adult. I simply took the attitude with him, that it is okay, and normal to do it, but if your grades slip, or you get arrested, or caught at school with it, I'll kick your ass.

Today he is well on his way to a college degree, one that he's been working towards for quite some time. He was always focused, and pot never got in his way. So I let him smoke it. He is after all, a great kid! Plus he knows if he has a question about drugs, he can come to me and get an honest answer from me.
Peace

I agree with all of the above. With my kids though it is two different issues:

ONE
My son has an addictive personality. I know this. Unfortuanatly he had to be on medication from an early age. This was not good in the long run for him but then I did not know any different and you try and help the best you think you can. He has tourettes syndrome and with that there is a whole ball of wax: Attention deficete hyperactivity disorder, OCD, Depression. He would steal to do drugs. He stole a LB of pot once from a nieghbor. When we found out about a week later, he had done most of it. He just cannot stop once he starts. Will steal from anyone, anything, no matter what. This has nothing to do with Pot but a lot to do with him. He will do whatever drug or anything else that will get him high.

TWO
My daughter has seen her brother do all this. She is younger. I know she smokes pot, and we have talked about it. We have also talked about the medical MJ and she knows part of what WE smoke for is for medication. I have talked openly about this with her and she also knows about GP. She is totally againest what I call hard drugs. She is in school, has high values and knows smoking pot is for her, recreational, occasionally, not a nessasity. I also know she drinks occasionally, but with control. a cooler or two, that is it. I don't like it but hey, I can't police her actions.

Kids are going to do what they will do whether you like it or not. I know I did, and my mum did not and still does not know what i did at my daughter's age. The thing of it is, if you have taught them self control and show it yourself, then they will be in charge of it, not it of them. But it does not work with all kids. We have to also know this and know when to draw the line. But making them a center shot does nothing but make it go underground.

They don't come with handbooks at birth and we all have to muddle through the best we can. And pray it all comes out well.

I think the sign should have read "I smoked pot and got caught" not I like to smoke pot and get caught, that's simply embarassing and degrading.

Exactly, humiliation and degradation are not suitable forms of discipline. He's gonna give his son a complex.

Well done big dad, now your son will make sure he isn't caught the next time and then it might not be just some harmless weed...

freak neocon media has fooled us into the believe that serious punishment if the slightest offence would solve the problem - it is more a revenge motivated action then one to draw positive conclusions from.

If that been my son i would rather have a long chat with him - if the boy does good in school and is active he only will get a little head-wash of possible dangers and lack of control, if he isn't doing so well i would rather want to know if he has a reasons for that.
I would give em the same shit they told me in HS but would try to explain to him where the true dangers are waiting, as the pusher he buys his weed from, cops, other kids parents that call LEO on him... and then also about the dangers of alcohol and other drugs, recreational as lifestyle stuff (juicer stuff)

actually, beside the stigma to it, i would rather see my kids sharing a smoke on the weekend then killing one beer after another as i did as a teen. Never picked a fight stoned but sure enough if drunk and nowadays it isn't anymore the little dance it used to be... education is a a issue of the parents and not the government - tough job
