| In search for foreign intelligence, spies turn to YouTube, MySpace, blogs by Nick Juliano Go To Original With rapidly advancing technology spreading across the globe, US spies are shifting their focus from surreptitiously photographing secret Soviet documents to trolling the Internet for what could be the next key nugget of foreign intelligence. Among the most valuable sources, one top spook says, are blogs, MySpace and other Web 2.0 hallmarks. "We're looking now at YouTube, which carries some unique and honest-to-goodness intelligence," Doug Naquin, director of the CIA's Open Source Center said in a recent speech to CIA retirees. The speech was posted this week on SecrecyNews, the blog of the Federation of American Scientists Project on Government Secrecy. "I would not have thought of YouTube as an obvious source of intelligence," Steven Aftergood, the project's director, told InfromationWeek, "but I think it's a good sign that the Open Source Center is looking at it, and at other new media." Open source intelligence collection focuses on compiling and analyzing unclassified data from publicly available sources for use by the CIA, policy makers and other law enforcement agencies. Formerly known as the Foreign Broadcast Information Service, the Open Source Center's mission in recent years has shifted from translating newspaper and television reports from abroad to culling the Web for information on foreign targets. The center trains intelligence agents and others in government. "This training includes everything from media analysis to advanced Internet exploitation, way beyond Googling," Naquin said. The goal of open-source collection is to provide information that goes beyond what appears in the morning newspaper, and analysis of Web 2.0 content has become a key part of that, he said. "A couple years back we identified Iranian blogs as a phenomenon worthy of more attention, about six months ahead of anybody else," he said. Now even Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has his own blog. "We're looking at chat rooms and things that didn't even exist five years ago, and trying to stay ahead," Naquin said. "We have groups looking at what they call 'Citizens Media': people taking pictures with their cell phones and posting them on the Internet. Then there's Social Media, phenomena like MySpace and blogs." With the end of the Cold War, Naquin said open source collection became a low priority in the Intelligence Community, causing the FBIS staff to be cut in half during the 90s. The terror attacks aimed at New York and Washington changed all that. "[Nine-Eleven] was sort of a watershed for us," Naquin said. "The 9/11 Commission and WMD Commission both said, 'You know what? There are a lot of open sources out there. We should be putting a lot more attention toward exploiting those sources." Naquin's full speech is available here (.pdf).

| nothing more then to cover up that they spying on US citizens within the states which is officially illegal for them to do but every day business - as they spy on allied countries in Europe where they tap companies to gain their R&D information and copy those - or how should the CIA/NSA end up with so many patents (okay, over middlemen they do it so it won't show on the record, but this is also one of their hidden sources of money to found operations that aren't in the true interest of the United States. Its just another source to them as the drug money - hey do you wonder sometimes why there is so much opium in Afghanistan again since operation anaconda) in the past 15 years?! in some business paper i read last year that companies in GB alone suffered loses more then $100 million US due to this and that it is even worse in other European countries. Now add all the tempered liberties of people that personal rights been trampled on by them all around the world to this - it is about time that some pulls the plug in Langley. they haven't prevented 9/11 nor anything else, so they bring no safety to the people but plenty of suffering. shut em down please!!!

| Something else the CIA is involved in too: Super-dollar bills Does this term sound familiar to you? If not i will explain it to you. These are unaccounted US Dollar bills that are from their quality either equal or better bills then the ones in your wallet. Now they floating around now for years, always up to date with all new security measures and normally so perfect that the main distinguishing feature from "real" bills is that they are far better in quality then the real ones - so perfection. Now, the blame game for the source of this has named a few nice places by now as the Iraq, the former German Democratic Republic (DDR/that German "north Korea" that went down back in 89/90) Iran and currently North Korea. Well, lets first look at this place to see how ridiculous the claim is: this place is so run down that most of the country has no electrical power and the parts that have for <5hours, most vehicles they have a old Chinese trucks that run by wood carbonizes (which isn't the best method to power an combustion engine as sulphuric acid build in the process that is eating up the vital parts of the engine) and they got no source for the materials you would need to print a even halfway good fake. Now, what would you need to print a Super-dollar bill: -German/Swiss made high end printing machine @ $250 - 300 million a piece -Swiss made special bill ink (the dollar ink is produced under license by an US company in HS facility somewhere in the states) -best American cotton (you can trace this by isotopes in the paper/cellulose of the bills) -need to now the exact technique of the print -need perfect negative films/printing plates as Hollywood calls them (they are metal film matrix with a negative image of the to print money, looks like some heavy duty tin foil with a negative on) Now, to all this (not even the cotton, as it is a quality and strain that isn't marketed freely for security) no one really as has as much access off, at least without causing some major suspicion, then the federal print - but who has access to this again?? And did I state that you can grow cotton in Korea in the first place as it is way to cold there? So even if they would gain some seeds of this cotton strain it would end already there, besides the problem of the not fitting isotopes then. ![]() Well guess, the good old CIA - and to the same answer came Interpol last summer too after they reviewed the possible sources of these Super-dollars due to a conference in Lyon in June of 2006. This was the only source they could think of for those fake banknotes. And this isn't too unlikely after all if you think of the fact that it is known that the CIA did the same with Russian tenders during the cold war, only 50 million of these Super-dollars showed up so far but the investment to print them would be in the hundred's of millions and they are simply to well made not to come from a insider. To the same findings came by the way a group of reporters of McClatchy Group (The McClatchy Company - About) now as well after some 10 month of research into this. Oh, and this isn’t just a Dollar problem, the tender of the European Union faces the same problem that there are fakes of their bills flowing around since 2004-05 that printed better then the real thing. Interestingly, they use the same printing machines as the US federal Mint, but have some other security features printed in that technically a bit above those of the current US Dollar bills if I’m correct, but there are far less of this fund, less then a million in currency till now, so it isn’t such a big deal yet. They blame some east European criminal outfits for this work but my guess, these are also printed by the CIA for some operations within the European Union they could not possible justify neither in congress nor to the European allies. And the biggest difference in this case is that the Europeans won’t go to war over this, but Bush is pushing hard to use the issue as excuse to act on North Korea. And as interesting side note of history: The CIA printed the fake Ruble bills to destabilize the Soviet economy in order to crush them this way – aren’t we just in a economical crisis due to a crumbling dollar? Do you own thinking here who they crushing this time ![]()
