Another reason under 18 should not smoke MJ

This is the direction that the White House is taking in their "Drug War". They (US Gov't) gets a lot more press than the MJ folks, and an article like this can de-rail the efforts that so many have gone to in order to potentially gain legal status for MJ in America.

Could be some truth in what the man's saying, and even if it is just a "thread" of truth the Gov't is going to exploit the hell out of it for propaganda purposes.

Feds Link Teens, Depression and Marijuana to Mental Illness, Suicidal Thoughts

Depression, teens and marijuana are a dangerous mix that can lead to dependency, mental illness or suicidal thoughts, according to a White House report being released Friday.

A teen who has been depressed at some point in the past year is more than twice as likely to have used marijuana as teens who have not reported being depressed — 25 percent compared with 12 percent, said the report by the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy.
"Marijuana is a more consequential substance of abuse than our culture has treated it in the last 20 years," said John Walters, director of the office. "This is not just youthful experimentation that they'll get over as we used to think in the past."

Smoking marijuana can lead to more serious problems, Walters said in an interview.

For example, using marijuana increases the risk of developing mental disorders by 40 percent, the report said. And teens who smoke pot at least once a month over a yearlong period are three times more likely to have suicidal thoughts than nonusers, it said.

The report also cited research that showed that teens who smoke marijuana when feeling depressed were more than twice as likely as their peers to abuse or become addicted to pot — 8 percent compared with 3 percent.

Experts who have worked with children say there's nothing harmless about marijuana.

"I've seen many, many kids' lives negatively impacted and taken off track because of marijuana," said Elizabeth Stanley-Salazar, director of adolescent services for Phoenix House treatment centers in California. "It's somewhat Russian roulette. There are so many factors, emotional, psychological, biological. You can't predict the experimentation and how it will impact a kid."

The drug control policy office analyzed about a dozen studies looking at marijuana use, including research by the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.

Overall, marijuana use among teens has decreased 25 percent since 2001, down to about 2.3 million kids who used pot at least once a month, the drug control office said.

While the drop is encouraging, Walters appealed to parents to recognize signs of possible drug use and depression.

"It's not something you look the other way about when your teen starts appearing careless about their grooming, withdrawing from the family, losing interest in daily activities," Walters said. "Find out what's wrong."

if it were legal, it should be regulated like alcohol, taxed as a demerit good, and restricted to persons under 21. As it should be used responsibly and 21 year olds in general have a better sense of responsibility in terms of driving under the influence and so fourth.

And since it will be more readily available it could eliminate the black market "predator drug dealers" targeting children lolol.

PS i am a pathological liar, and have illusions of grandeur. I post pictures of pot plants i found on the internet and i have never nor will i ever consider the cultivation of marijuana, as it is illegal.

Yes, and no. In some people it is a real blessing if they have depression, but in others it reacts differently. Just like Ritalin is a depressant to some, and a stimulant to others.

In my case, I am one of the ones that fights the depression, so I speak from experience. Most adults, once recognizing the source of the issue, can manage it just fine with attitude adjustments, but younger folks don't have the life experience yet to handle that aspect. JMHO

What would you rather have your child on when they are depressed. pot or paxil? I turned to pot as a teen because I was a stressed, depressed teen. Back then I didn't know my anxiety was a clinical, treatable problem. I got put on imipramine, then paxil which is a pain even finding the right dose. It might as well have made me bipolar. I know a lot of people who have had suicidal thoughts, but turned to pot to help the stress of life that was overwhelming them.

Ritalin = Crystal Meth! people feeding this to their kids should be beaten - at least if you ask me.

i think that to a hyperactive or depressed kid is for more mediacl potental in MM then in prozac or ritalin - both commonly used today, both known to be extremely dangerous due to mental and physical side effects, and both cash croppers of the pharmaceutical industry - i think that the medical use under guidance as well as the relational use if under some parental supervision is no problem. the problem is rather that kids are still told that MJ will kill em on the spot if they even touch it and then they still try it to figure out that all propaganda was false and so should be then also with all the other stuff they told you, my point on this.

Why they fell so depressed is because they finally found something that works for them.And realize it's illegal for no good reason.
When you fund the research you can get the answers you want!!!

People have varying brain chemestries, in that in some folks a certain substance will react one way, and in others, it's different.

Sad to say it, but as bad as the drug is, it DID help me get through a few grades in elementary school..but when it started becoming apparent that many of the kids on it were having other issues (emotional crap) I told my peeps "NO more", and they respected my choice.

MMJ if far superior, in my experience, in helping me with the adult ADHD. I am ablt to truly place my concentration on something and see it through until it's complete, and I am satisfied with the project.

In my case, though, I need to stick with the Sativa's, as I have clearly seen (as has my wife) that the more pure Indica's tend to being me "down", emotionally, so I avoid them, or save it for a bedtime smoke. Between 6AM and 10PM it's always a sativa or 80%sativa/20%indica blended smoke.
