I was talking to a friend yesterday. He mentioned a friend of his. His friends wife was cranky and didn't like his friends, etc. I suddenly remembered my Grandpa Red and my "Uncle Martian" (probably grandma's boyfriend)

What struck me was these men were always so docile and quiet and sweet and my grandmothers were always yelling at them and being mean!

I grew up watching this, but I never really gave it much thought. Now, I'm thinking if Grandma's were nicer to them, they may have smiled more.

There's a difference between being strong and being mean. Personally, I want to be on the lookout for that line and when I cross it, I pray I will have the courage to take responsibility to do what it takes to set things right...

I have those same memories but with different people.
The men my granny's were screaming at were Drunks and wouldn't get up and help out around the house.
I learned early you reap what you sow.
I've seen this time and time again,Spending my childhood in this situation.
I grew up in a molded fairly(both parents divorced and remarried,giving me 4 sets of grandparents.)
And I learned one important thing from my step-grandparents,If you approach your relationship as a partnership and both share in the responsibilities of running the home/farm your life is less stressful and you are happier.
That being said let me introduce myself,I'm the Chief Shower/Toilet Scrubber extraordinaire,I also do mirrors,sinks,cat boxes,vacuum and fold clothes.
If that's what it takes to keep the peace,then it's a small price to pay.

my fathers mother died when he was sixteen when a drunk slammed into her cab, my grandfather on my dads side turned into a drunk then put a derringer behind his ear and pulled the trigger, he survived but lived out the rest of his life in a hospital bed, my moms parents were always bickering and what not but did get along wonderfully. rip grandpa he died in november

How tragic! How great is it that your grandparents got along so well inspite of everything. What was their secret? I want to learn it.

My grandma died 2 1/2 years ago. She was one of the cranky ones. Got real mellow and forgiving the last couple of months. I think she found peace.

Grandma was 98 and living in a convalescent home. Her last request of me was to get her high. One day when my daughter and I were visiting her in the home she says to me, "Hi-Dez2, do you smoke", and I knowing how very judgmental and harsh grandma is so we NEVER tell her ANYTHING, so I lie very sweetly and say, "no". She turns to my daughter and asks her, "Hi-Dez2's daughter, do you smoke" and my kid being no fool replies, "no grandma, I don't smoke". Then Gradma says, "Well, I would, if it wasn't cigerates!! I about fell to the floor, but what I said was, "Grandma, I will try to bring you some, if I can" and she just smiled.

I never did get grandma high, but the next time, I will march in with a Doc, and a rec and ask politely for the facility to allow me to administer medication to my patient and I will probably be successful.

Thanks Grandma! You may have been cranky, but you inspired me nonetheless.

my grandparents and my cousin were and are the only people to ever support me in all of my decisions, the day i found out my grandad died was the worst day of my life and the first time i cried since my best freind was hit by a crack high driver and killed when i was 17. i actually stopped smoking for a month after my grandad.
