Is anyone knowledgable of the publishing process?

I am currently working on my first actul book, as opposed to short stories, and well, I saw this category and thought I might ask this question...Is anyone here familiar with the publishing process, how to get started, etc..
I will be doing research on the matter of course, but I thought it couldn't hurt.

It is a fiction piece in which the main character is a family man down on his luck, a medical grower as well, I should mention, anyhow, he comes to realize accidenally that he is in the possession of a notepad that grants his wants when he writes them down on the notepad. I am working on chapter 5 right now. If you're interested, I am always willing to share an excerpt to trusted individuals for their opinion and criticism.

Thank you Baked, hopefully it will do well once it is completed. I should mention that the main character grows his own weed for medical use, and has a hand in the marijuana legalization act.
