I raised my lights last week per your suggestion and I got clonable shoots like over the weekend. So I moved in today to reap my reward of listening to good friends. Thank J-angle for the right on time help.

| | | Looking to move to the flower room Just a quick update on my grow with pics to follow later. Well my plants are starting to show their junk and wouldn’t you know it my biggest beautiful Shiva is a boy. I was so proud of this plant it could be on the cover of HT. He is a stud! It will hurt to pull him. Good news is I have one Shiva girl for sure (hairs) and one is still a little shy and has not presented its sex. I have one White Widow boy and one big girl for sure and am still waiting on the last one to show as well. It would be nice to have 2 girls each but I have more seed and will take what I get. Clones are hanging in their. I hope I’m doing right by them. I started cracking more seed yesterday. My comfort level growing with seed is higher than cloning so I’ll do both for a while Sunny day so I'll be working outside. |

sounds like everything is comming along nicely there mate,
are you goiing to discard your males?
have you got outside/inside room to keep him?

Yes, I guess will discard the males. I wish I could keep the big Shiva male but I'm not ready for that. I bought my seeds from Nirvana and every seed cracked and sprouted. As a novice I am able to grow some very nice looking plants. I hope they smoke as good as they look.

Hey Talisman,You may want to try and keep your males and collect there pollan and freeze it.You are learning as fast as your plants are growing, good job.Later on you may try cross pollinate some grils and have yourself some seeds for a later grow. You get another gril of the same you can pollinate her and have all the seeds you need and to keep that strain going.Just a throught.Keep up the good work. Peace

Thanks Toke for the encouraging words. I have an additional flowering room that I'm not using right now so I wil keep the male going to harvest its pollen.

you wont be dissapointed in keeping your male, pollen is so valuable, like white gold it is.
not to mention the fun of breeding and crossing

I have saved all my males and will plant them outside in an area about an acre away from the girls. They are all forming their nads well, as now I am sure they think it is fall due to having dark periods they have never seen before (24/0 light in my room) so I hope to gather the pollen before the girls are even ready to recieve it. Any info would be helpful.
Didn't mean to highjack your thread, Tal, but this is great info! And your babies are doing great, sweetie!

Here is a dumb question to go with Jangel's great question. If I find a place outside for my males, plant them and walk away... when I come back in the fall and find they survived could I expect smokable bud? Or are males only good for one thing?

males are only good for pollen/breeding. There are no buds to smoke just pollen sacks

harvesting the pollen is definately a good idea.
lacking confidence in my own ability, what i thought i'd do, once the situation presents itself, is to save a cutting from the male, in my veg room, then, when he grew healthy enough, i'd take a cutting from him.
once that cutting was rooted, i'd shitcan the dad and raise the clone up until big enough to take a cutting and just keep repeating until i was ready to breed one of my moms.
and Talisman, have you considered building a cloner, there are many DIY threads to make cloners that use the same principles as cloners that cost hundreds. shit, i built one myself for under $20.00 that i've only used once so far, but 17 of 18 rooted and within 6 days!
lol, if i can do it you can do it (you'll need to know how to operate a drill, lol)
i only ask 'cause i used your method (rockwool starter cubes) last year with great success but not so good this year (all died), anyway, i love the cloner, roots them reliably and quickly.

From the cloner how do you get the clones in your system if you do not use soil? Do I stick them in rockwool once they have roots? Wouldn't that damage the roots? I have the stuff laying around to make a DIY cloner. I may give it a go this weekend.

anyway, what i do is:
1) pre-soak your hydroton (get hygromite instead if possible) in your solution (i use approx. 5ml of ThriveAlive B1 Red, 1 drop of Superthrive and 2ml hygrozyme (i don't know if the hygrozyme is needed or not, my first run with the cloner was without the hygrozyme)
2) put the hydroton into a container filled with your solution and deep enough to sink your pots into
shit, let me do one and post some pics

sorry it took so long to reply jangle,
i find that the males are good only for the pollen and practise, collect the pollen practise cloning, thou grafting is something that im keen on trying on a male also
as for males for breeding, having a collection of pollen is even better than seeds i think, if your store it correctly then you have the chance to cross all of your strains to create awsome new fun ones, i have some acapulco gold, columbian gold and panama red seeds on the way which i can wait to get the pollen from make some panama red cross bubblegum, hoping it will turn out 'big red' like the cinnamon gum. hehe
be careful where you plant your males the pollen can travel many kilometers on the wind so make sure you have a wind break or some kind of obstruction inbetween you males and females, ie some trees or anything like that.
