The problem I was running into was the lower leaves turned yellow and the upper leaves were "canoeing." I snipped off the yellow leaves so the plants don't waste any more energy trying to heal them. Anyone know if it's true that the bottom leaves always turn yellow? (That's what someone told me)

Grow Attempt Number Two
__________________________________________________ ____________________________________
Germination
Sunday, July 26th, 2008
– Germination attempt from new bagseed begun. (At 1am).
Monday, July 28th, 2008 – Over twenty have cracked and began to sprout.
Tuesday, July 29th, 2008 – Planted many in cups of miracle grow soil and placed in grow-tub.
Wednesday, July 30th, 2008 – Planted the rest.
Thursday, July 31st, 2008 – Most have taken root and are now growing.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________________
Week One – Lighting 24/24
Friday, August 1st, 2008 – After germination, over twenty seedlings have hatched and the sprouts reach towards the lights. The highest is about an inch tall.

Saturday, August 2nd, 2008 – 11:30am, temperature 82° , humidity 39%. Transplanted a double sprout. I now have 23 sprouts. Watered them all. Finished at 12:10pm. No nutes.

To Do List:
***What am I going to do with them all?*** Start planning.
Research:
    1. Watering
    2. Temperature & humidity
    3. C02
    4. Lighting cycles
    5. Transplanting
    6. Outdoor Growing
    7. Repelling Insects & slugs
    8. Trimming
    9. Sexing
    10. Scrogging
    11. Drying and curing
__________________________________________________ ____________________________________
Sunday, August 3rd, 2008 – 9:00pm, temperature 93° , humidity 30%. TOO HOT… Opened top to cool air down and added an external fan to blow air-conditioned air into the front intake. Temp now 83° , Humidity 30%. Lost 3 sprouts today (20 left) either from over-watering, overheating or from my over-fiddling. The leafs look a bit bloated and droopy, which I suspect is from too much water. Will not water again till they look healthy and the soil is light in my hand. Must resist the temptation to keep fiddling with the plants.
__________________________________________________ ____________________________________
Tuesday, August 5th, 2008 – 10:30 to 11:30am, temperature 83° , humidity 31%. The leaves are "canoeing" and stretching. Moisture meter says they are all dry so I watered them again. They were a bit light in my hand. Drilled five larger holes in the bottom of the cups.

Wednesday, August 6th, 2008 – 5:30pm, temperature 90° , humidity 35%. TOO HOT. Opened cover to air out. Now at 85° and 35% humidity. Added two cylinders filled with water to increase humidity.

6:30pm to 7:10pm – Temperature 92° , humidity 31% --
TOO HOT. Removed center divider to use the passive air intake moved 8 "runts" to the bottom floor. Raised the 12 remaining sprouts to approximately 1 inch below the lights. One of the 12 is a runt, but I left it up top as a place to place my temperature and humidity gauge.

7:20pm It’s back to 91° and 33% humidity –
TOO HOT! How do I fix this?

7:21pm – temperature 94° /32% humidity
TOO HOT! Help!

7:45pm – Opened top again. Temperature is now 84° , Humidity 34%. I turned the bottom tub around, adjusted the fan, added a piece of cardboard to shoot the intake air upward and I placed a fan on the outside floor, blowing into the passive air intake. Removed water cylinders. Also changed Temp/Hum gauge battery to be sure it’s working correctly. Monitoring…

7:50pm – Temperature 92° , humidity 32% --
TOO HOT – What do I do? Opened tub again.

8:00pm – Temperature 88° , humidity 31% -- Better. Turned the bottom tub back around and lowered the platform so the plants are 2 ½ to 3 inches below the lights. Pointed fan more downward. Removed cardboard. It must be hot outside. I’m hot and air conditioner is on. Monitoring…

8:10pm – Temperature back up to 91° , humidity 29% --
TOO HOT. Nothing is working.

9:00pm – Opened top and raised the plants back up to approx. 1 inch below the lights. Moved temp and humidity gauge closer to the rear to see if it makes a difference in readings. Now it reads 91° and 29% humidity. Monitoring…

9:15pm – Now it reads 93° and 28% humidity. Monitoring…

9:30pm – Now it reads 96° and 25% humidity. Monitoring…

9:45pm – Now it reads 97° and 23% humidity. Monitoring…

10:00pm – 97° and 23%. Moved plants down to about 4 ½ to 5 inches from the bulbs.Temperature has already declined to 91° and 24% humidity. Monitoring…

11:00pm – Opened top to let the plants cool down. I put the middle partition back and moved the eight "runts" back to the top. I added 4 cylinders of water to increase the humidity. Going to store to buy sugar and yeast to make a C02 bottle.

11:15pm – Now reads 82° and 28% humidity. What else can I do but sit back and wait?

11:30pm – Now reads 84° and 27% humidity. Monitoring…

12:00am – Now reads 85° and 28% humidity. Monitoring…

Thursday, August 7th, 2008 – 4:30pm, temperature 87° , humidity 28%. TOO HOT. Opened cover to air out. "Velcroed" the temp & humid gauge between the large front fan and the small intake fan so it’s no longer blocking the air flow. pH of the soil is about 6.

7:45pm – temperature 88° , humidity 28%. I see some growth.

11:00pm – temperature 87° , humidity 29%. Added C02 bottle.

__________________________________________________ ____________________________________

Week Two – Lighting 24/24

Saturday, August 9th, 2008 – 7:30am, temperature 84° , humidity 28%. Watered all plants. Some are yellowing (the bottom leaves) and some are folding together / reaching upward they look sick.

12:00pm – temperature 84° , humidity 35%.

NOTE
: the temperature has stabilized as the result of me using Velcro to mount the tem/humidity gauge on the upper front wall. Also because of me raising the metal fan to blow across the lights, carrying the hot air directly out the top exhaust fan.

3:00pm, temperature 78° , humidity 32%. Trimmed off all yellow lower nodes, and cut all lower yellow leaves.

EXPERIMENT: Sprayed all plants in grape juice containers, (4) with full strength worm-poo to see what happens.

9:00pm - The worm-poo plants already show signs of accelerated growth.

mornin' RS, good job with the pics.

when you get a chance, you should spray paint the inside of your bins with
flat white paint. something else that might be causing some of your
heat issues is your intake, you'd be better off using both fans as exhaust
and just having a passive intake, unless the fans are matched, the intake
fan will actually retard airflow.

the curling leaves you describe sound like heat stress and the yellowing
might be a lack of nitrogen but, at this age, you shouldn't be feeding them
yet anyway. i would suggest a good flush with water that has been ph'ed
to about 6.8 and run plenty of water through your plants, 3 - 4 times the
volume of the pot. also, the next time you pot-up seedlings, don't use the
Miracle Grow, it's packed with slow release nutes and will often kill seedlings.

lol, you're also gonna run outa room in a New York minute. while i admire
your zeal, that many plants in that small a grow area are only gonna cause
you problems, you need to cull them and get down to about a half-dozen
plants.

anyway, half the fun is the panic you feel when something goes wrong and,
with help and patience, you solve your problem. very satisfying.

good luck man, there's no bud as sweet as the one you grow yourself.

oh yeah, about the lights, those bulbs will be great for flowering
and they will work for vegging but you're gonna get some stretching.
those are Soft Whites which are 2700Kelvin, what works best for
vegging is Cool White, somewhere between 5000Kelvin and 6500Kelvin.

anyway, good luck and have fun

Yeah, I know there's not much room, but I didn't want to kill the sprouts. I'm thinking about finding a secluded area and planting the extras there to see what happens.

Thanks Bozo,

I've lined the inside with a reflective emergency blanket as I could not find any Mylar at Home Depot, Lowes or Wall-Mart. It's wrinkely, but it's better than nothing.

As for my fans, I have one intake fan, one exahust fan, one large adjustable internal fan, and one lower passive intake. Once I got the adjustable fan facing the right direction, all my heat problems stopped. The plants are looking much better now. (See Below)

Question about flushing: that's when I pour alot of water through each plant until all the water and impurities come out the bottom, right? Wouldn't this be akin to overwatering? I'd hate to damage the plants. Plus, as you know, I'm using the time-release Miracle Grow soil. Won't that just release the nutes in the soil too early?

Also, rather than culling the extra plants, I was thinking of taking the least productive ones and planting them in a secluded woodland area nearby and see how they do. What do you think about that?

Rolling Stoned

P.S. Thanks for the tip about the bulbs. Due to finacial constaints, I'll have to wait till I brew the next batch of green. But it's nice to know that the ones I have are sufficiant though. That's one less thing to worry about!

Hey RS very detailed grow journal nice! and J.A. Bozo's feedback is spot on...as far as flushing...I wouldn't with those seedlings...just keep the soil moist but not wet.....flushing is not needed until a build up of plant waste/excess ferts causes problems such as nutrient lock due to pH changes or when you are finishing up flowering

Seedlings outside in August? I don't think they are gonna make it unless you live near the equator or in the southern Hemisphere..but it can't hurt you may even get a little bud bearing plant as the deminishing light will signal the plant to bud as soon as it is able..but don't put it outdoors if it is a security risk...I don't think it would be worth it for the small amount you are unlikely to harvest anyway...see if others agree with me on this
