Richard Owl Mirror's Experimental Landrace Grow Log
I received my auction seeds from Seedbay Cannabis Seed Auctions today.
15 Nepali seeds for $15 plus, they included 5 free Mazar I Sharif seeds.
The first strain, Nepali, I don't have much info on but, many cross strains have used landrace marijuana from Nepal with great success.
Quote:
Nepali Lineage: pure Landrace from Baglung, Nepal Type: Sativa Taste: fruity bubble gum Effect: euphoric high with a bodystone
The second strain, Mazar I Sharif, I found a bit more info on.
Quote:
Mazar-i-Sharif Genetics: Traditional North Afghan charas cultivar Type: Traditional landrace/pure-bred Variety: Indica Giant Height: 3-4 meters in natural outdoor environment in Mazar-i-Sharif. Yield: 1.5 to 2 kg of dried flowers in natural outdoor environment Aroma: pungent, intense terpene aroma, classic Afghan, with some sweetness Harvest: early December to early January Characteristics: Unusually large indica strain with classic wide leaved characteristics
I planted TWO Nepali seeds and, ONE Mazar I Sharif seed to begin with.
As you can imagine, there isn't much to show tonight but,
I wanted to begin this particular grow log so I can document this grow from start to finish.
It should be quite an experience.
Stay tuned !

Congrat.'s,, Best Wishes, Luck & Karma On Your Grow,,Are These Going Outside Or Staying Indoors?
I'm going to need to keep them indoors unfortunately.
Hopefully the INDICA GIANT will fit ;>}
Actually, I did read elsewhere about the MAZAR I SHARIF that the locals allow it to continue past the time the snow falls before they harvest it to make Hashish.
Maybe it would work outside, if I had a place to plant it.

I found this web link, I believe it might be where the Nepali seeds were hand collected by this individual. It's a very long read, very interesting story of his trek through the entire region, seeking out these seeds.
Good luck with the new grow Richard. Those look very interesting. Can't wait to see the big fat leaves on that Indica strain. I hope it fits in your room too. Might be an excellent Lst candidate.
Can you imagine the look on someones eyes if they saw one of those Mazar's growing outdoors near completion at 3-4 meters tall? Then of course you would have to tie them up and leave them somewhere until you harvested. LOL

the cannibis world out in the eastern world is quite interesting. I have an online friend that grows and lives in kabul. According to him, there are parts of the country where the cannibis grows wild, except it is such low quality all you can really do is go running through the feilds collecting what they call "live hash" or "charas".. the plant material is made into a butter based drink called "bhang" wich is not to potent, but after a full day of drinking it, you'll be on your arse.
Well i guess throughout the years, the very little "decent growers" over there took this strain and crossed it into a more potent, more usefull plant that can deffinately deliver a BANG!
It sounds to me you ended up with one of these strains through the auction. I'll pull up a chair for this one!
Rich, im interested in this seedbay auction you use, you seem to score some good deals, i read a lot of posts. I might give it a try tonight. Do you have a screen name or anything like that? Maby ill create and account tonight and try to find you over there!

I posted a question on ICMAG for Gypsy about these Nepali seeds. Here is the answer I received.

I'm assuming Ingamar is a well known breeder, although I can't find any info on him/her.

Richard there is an Ingmar at Dutch Passion Seeds perhaps it is a typo or the interpretation of his name Gypsy wrote? You are correct not too much about that Nepali on the net.
I agree STL I love a good mystery. This could be a crazy strain that someone has been sitting on and forgot about it. Oooops stoner moment! Tada now Richard gets it.

The mystery continues.....
Thanks! I found Dutch Passion website and sent an e-mail describing my situation and asked if he could provide any info. We'll see if he will respond.
In the mean time, I found this bit of info on the website, I found it very interesting.

From literature and our own findings it appears that the growth of a male or female plant from seed, except for the predisposition in the gender chromosomes, also depends on various environmental factors. The environmental factors that influence gender are:
a higher nitrogen concentration will give more females.
a higher potassium concentration will give more males.
a higher humidity will give more females.
a lower temperature will give more females.
more blue light will give more females.
Fewer hours of light will give more females.
It is important to start these changes at the three-pairs-of-leaves stage and continue for two or three weeks, before reverting to standard conditions.
To produce our feminized seeds, we start with selected female clones. Under standard conditions these female clones do not produce any male flowers. By the method we found, we are able to have these female clones produce abundant male flowers and pollen (see photos). The pollen thus produced we use for the production of our "feminized" seeds
I wonder if this might be attributed to people finding their plants going Hermie on them?

Well I am still waiting for signs of life from the three seeds I planted directly in soil. In the mean time I decided to put 3 Nepali seeds in the Paper Towel method to make sure they are viable seeds.
I soaked the paper towel with dechlorinated water, selected 3 seeds, folded it up and stuck it inside a small Ziploc bag. I set the bag on top of my monitor and 24 hours later checked them. All three had popped!
I prepared 3 beer cups with my soil mixture, wet the soil down and planted the seeds this morning (06-20-09) numbered #3, #4 & #5.
I decided to follow the wisdom found in the (settle this once and for all) thread by planting all 3 seeds with the tails pointing skyward.

Hey Richard I just planted my Black Ice seeds this morning. So we can unofficially have a friendly (very friendly) grow off together. I would love to see them take off along with your new babies. I will start a new log maybe Monday. Good luck with those.

Sounds Good! Now what is Black Ice consisting of? These are Sativa so, they will be long flowering.
Of course, hopefully I'll have one Mazar growing too and that is a 60 day flowering strain.

Black Ice is a unique cross between Black Queen (White Widow x Zombie Black) and Cinderella 99 (Jack Herer x Shiva Skunk) producing a powerhouse (mostly) indica strain. Highly resinous and wonderfully aromatic with musky/earthy aroma reminiscent of sweet incense. Produces dense buds with heavy hitting sledgehammer style highs. Great medicinal weed numbs pain and your brain in one hit!

I may just have to try this information out regarding influencing the sex of the plant.
Quote:
a higher potassium concentration will give more males if begun after the third node and continued for 2-3 weeks
I would really like to perpetuate and breed the Nepali & Mazar strains.
Both strains tolerate cold weather so, up here in the North Country it could prove to be an excellent outdoor strain.
