Yes, toke, do a tute on it, it is important and I am sure many would benifit from it. Mine is installed now, and pretty close to the window it exits to so I don't know if that will help me.

Default getting the ark in the basement

This wardrobe must weight well over 200lbs....the hard part was getting over the grass and then down a flight of concrete stairs by myself...but where there is a will there is a way

This monster cabinet is 8 ft tall and 3.5x2.25 area so I am going to want
3.5x2.25x5000 = about 40000 lumens if I go for a minimum acceptable of 5000 lumens per square foot

my CFL's are about 10000 lumens each so 2 6500k and 2 2700k should be sufficient

as you can see 6 five gallon kitty litter containers fit in rather nicely - I will use those as the final flowering container.

I figure I can let the plants get about 3 ft high which is fine for me

well getting down to the room took about 2 hours so now I will just wait for the next moment of inspirations

the dogs and cats wanted to help but mostly just got in the way.

Glad you have 4 helpers there, Scott. I wondered how you went through all that cat litter on your own! LOL! I have been buying cat food and litter in those pails as well, then my daughter finds it all in garbage bags and says " Hey! Where are the pails mum?" ".....ummmmmm, I dunno.........guess they got ate." The cats are her responsibility and right now she has not noticed that the sides of the pail her present cat litter is in has holes aka vid's odour machine in them, till I find some more gel stuff to make a new odour destroyer up. LOL! ....the things we do!

Scott,

There are several things you can do to quiet a fan down.

First, to reduce the sound of the air exiting you want to locate the fan as far from the duct exhaust point as possible, even if that means bending a 4" duct around 180 degrees and exhaust it out the other side, that, or use the fan to push the air through the light instead of having it pull the air through and then the fan is right next to the exhaust port, and the fan + exhaust air sound is amplified outside the cab as a result.

Now for the odd stuff:

Get a couple old rubber mouse pads and cut them into gaskets that will go between the fan mount and the cab. This will help insulate the fans vibrations from the cab frame,

Then, get one or both of these products:

Quantum Hot Sauce Reel Grease

Quantum Hot Sauce Reel Oil

You can re-grease the bearings in the fan with the "Hot Sauce", and any swivel parts can be lubricated with that grease...it is superb stuff, and will keep those parts much quieter. That lubricant is "HOT" stuff, so just a drop shold be good.

There are also exhaust dampeners that can be used, as Toke has advised. Start by quieting down that fan, as you'll want max performance from the fan, and dampeners, if not free-flowing, can create more backpressure in the fan forcing it to work harder...but they can also really quiet things down, too!

Scott,

Came up with a decent design idea in a Google search, one which follows the concept of Tokes baffle system:

Silent-Mod Duct Silencers – HVAC

Don't know much, but sound and noise dampening is a matter of insulation, isolation and density of materials. Redirect as Toke has is one of the best ways to kill the air sound, but the fan itself can whine or make other noises that are unwanted.

I would suggest a quality fan like the 4" Vortex. I have run one now for over a year straight and it has performed flawlessly, and is still so quiet I have to really listen to hear it. (keep in mind I don't hear well to start with..LOL)

Vortex Powerfans 4" Inline Fan- 172CFM

Absolutely put a Speed Controller on it. I can run mine at 75% and it is substantially quieter, and so long as it cools the light sufficiently it'll work.

Here is the same exact Speed Controller that any hydro stores sells for $24.00 or more...just a better price:

I have a 6 in vortex and that sucker is loud, ISO . I can here it through the cold air intake and where it exhausts to in the front of the house, so if I am nervous, I just turn it off. Only thing I can do, to to be stealth about it at all. If it would be quiet and I had to move it I would in a second.

WOW...I've never heard anyone have an acoustic issue with a Vortex. True, a Vortex can make some noise, but once you install a speed controller on it and drop it back from the 100% level they quiet down in a hurry. Also, how it's mounted makes a big difference, as it is incredible how much a fan (or any device) can radiate/resonate when solid mounted.

I've got my 6" Vortex sucking through 2 air cooled fixtures, too. I need to go do some work out there, and will take some current ones of the fan set-up..I know I don't hear well, but it really is quiet!
