Rep Power: 87 | | New grow... new genetics.
I recently decided to sprout some big ol' beans from this really expensive bag that a friend bought last year. It was about 400 an oz, disgustingly pricey but hell, I didn't pay for it. All five germinated and were put in peat plugs and have since began growing fairly nicely. It has only been about three days since being planted and they are all about two inches tall now. I plan on doing my first DWC grow with these and am praying that I get at least one girlie out of the deal. After I get new air stones (the ones I have were for five gallon buckets and are about four inches too long for the two gallon ones I bought) I will set up the buckets and hopefully be off and running. I use a 150watt HPS through my whole grow with a ton of supplemental fluorescent lighting to include both t-8 and cfl's. I'm hoping with the switch from soil I can avoid some of the overbearing issues I had last time with mites and gnats. I have scrubbed the little closet and surrounding areas with a bleach mix, and have also applied a spray to the walls and floor to help prevent infestation. I'll try to get some pics up soon, but they are still really small. Any input, or suggestions, or tips or stuff like that would be cool.

I've done a ton of research on the system so I'm not too worried about it, but I'm sure I'll be on here a couple times crying and begging for help...lol

I found out that the air stones I bought are too big for the buckets I have... lol dumb mistake i should have measured the stupid buckets. Anyways, I was wondering if there was a certain shape or style of air stone that is better than another. What is recommended in a DWC set up? I've seen everything from the flat round ones, to the ball looking ones, to the standard rectangle ones, any thoughts on this?

For A Bucket, I Would Think The Flat Round Ones Might Work The Best.

thanks hatch... I was thinking that but was unsure of output or flow... also if they tend to clog easy or if they are cleanable...

Ya, If You Have A Good Air Pump Hooked To It, Yes It Will Work Great, And They Will Break Down (a round plastic stand will remove) Easy, All The Way To The Stone For Easy Cleaning, I Have Had Some For A Long Time (? can't remember exactly) But Over A Year And They Are Still Working Fine.

I ended up getting two inch oxy stones... they are pretty good and only 1.95 each so the price was right. I set up the DWC buckets today and put the hopeful ladies in and turned everything on... still watering from the top for a little while til the roots pop out the bottom but I'm hopeful at the moment.
I had something I think is strange happen... I filled the buckets with a gallon of tap water each (they are only two gal buckets) and mixed nutrient, and superthrive, then tested the ph... the ph tested within the "good" range of 5.5 to 6.5 without having to do anything to it, is that normal? I have a cheap tester where you have to fill a vial then use drops and compare to a color chart, but I'm pretty positive I did it right, and I did it twice... any thoughts on that?
I'm still working on pics, the wife thinks its too risky to post them but I'm trying to talk her into it. I know there are precautions taken here to ensure privacy in that matter. I have to respect that she lives here too and its her and my butt if something happens...

I'm using tap water, super thrive and a nutrient mix also and i'm getting the same results. I am testing with full range ph strips that I bought from a local chemistry store. I think as long as the water you start with is at a good ph level your alright. that is if you don't mix your nutes to strong.
As for the pics, i would love to see some but saftey is a major concern. Mine are not at my residence so i feel smoe what safe about posting. Of course they're really just a figment of my imagination, lol. I only have a couple plants and a few clones. The feds have a 49 plant threshhold so i'm not to worried. And local law enforcement have to go throught to many hurdles to mess with someone as small time as me....

I mixed my nutrient really week cause they are still just seedlings, so maybe that was why. I know they have computer geeks gods around here and am almost certain they do something to pics to erase any trace of where they come from... hopefully some of the staff or a mod could solidify that thought for me.

Yeah, that would great if we knew for sure. I am mixing full strength with half veg nutes and half bloom nutes for a couple more days. then I will go with straight bloom. they seem to be responding well. I will probably flush just prior to going with bloom only to make sure there isn't a bunch of salt build up locking the roots out. I check the ph on every mix, and i also monitor the soil ph from time to time.

I'm doing DWC this time around, first time for me, so I'm not able to enjoy the buffer of soil if I get something wrong. I hope I get it right.

you really don't need much room to get the job done, this is just a regular small bedroom closet two foot deep by three foot wide or so, I'm extremely limited on space but hope to move next year to a place where I can be more productive.

Rep Power: 201 | | Hi operator1. I just wanted to offer a suggestion about handling your water. Draw your water a day ahead of using it and throw a air stone in there if you have room on the pump manifold. PH your water after 24 waters so you know what your basic pH is. Most nutes will lower your pH as you increase their amount in the solution. After you mix your nutes, wait 20 minutes before you test your pH again so they have a chance to stabilize. 5.6 is right around the sweet spot and 5.2 to 5.9 is the range to stick with...BTY, the shape of the air stone is minor to the bubbling action your looking for. Test your combination of air stones and air pump, out in a bucket and pick the one that looks like a washing machine. Then test the whole setup out with the combination you picked and make sure all the buckets are similarly aerated, this will tell you if you need a bigger air pump. Remember, if it doesn't work perfectly during the test, it will only lose efficientency as you proceed thru the grow. Good luck and happy growing. | | The Following 3 Users Say Thank You to Zigzagman For This Useful Post: | | | Thread Tools | | | | Display Modes | Linear Mode |
