I'm pretty excited! My first serious attempt...
Here's what I'm looking at. Please feel free to let me know what you think...
...It'll be a dirt grow. Six T5s are my illumination for this flower box to start. The box, a wooden shipping crate, opens from the top and is 3' tall and 2-1/2' by 1-1/2'. I have all the 3000K bulbs I need to flower. I might supplement with CFLs, as needed, but I'd like to keep the crate as cool and quiet as possible.
I'm generally intrigued by LED panels, but I have not really seen any compelling evidence that the common commercial LED grow panels are truly well-suited for producing heavy, dense flowers. If so, they would be seemingly perfect in my confined space.
While on the subject of lights, I was also curious to get opinions on UV-b "lizard lights" for boosting crystal production. I was on a different forum where a guy was swearing by this. Anyone ever tried or heard of this? Sounded maybe like he was running it for 15-20 minutes just as his dark cycle began each day. Obviously I'm all for boosting crystal production, but I'm curious if this approach is proven, or even plausible.
Back to the matter at hand...
I am most graciously accepting two established plants from a buddy's veg chamber. The suspects: Northern Lights (from seed, sex unknown) and Blueberry (a known female clone). I'm thinking they will veg for the first week or so and get accustomed to their new home, but my plan is to begin flowering at around 15" inches.
I need to do much more research when it comes to nutrients, but initially I'm leaning toward an organic recipe. Any suggestions?
The box is painted white with some crazy rubber roofing paint that came recommended. The wood is nicely stained a light chestnut on the outside.
Tomorrow, I'm hoping to install the lights and ventilation. I'm planning to vent with computer fan. Keeping that vent light-tight will hopefully be achieved by a dryer vent exhaust fitting (and a dark room).
Assuming everything stays cool and bright when I test, I'm really hoping to have everything online by early next week.
Thoughts? Rebuttal?
Hopefully more to come soon...
...Mischief

I see this community goes nuts for photos, so in an effort to not disappoint... Here's my shipping crate. It looks good, if I do say so myself. Got a lot of toil and support out of a very handy friend. It's getting tested for temp tonight. There are a few very minor light leaks, but nothing that cannot be fixed. If all goes well, it should be in service by the end of the weekend.

Sounds like a nice setup. While I haven't used a reptile light for any grows, I can tell you that they should help produce bud with more trichomes. They act like a protective barrier against UVB rays kinda like sunscreen. Below is a video that I have posted on GP, that should give you more of an idea of what I'm talking about. Hope it helps.

Nice grow box, you never did a pictorial of the build?

Ha, no pictorial of the build itself, sorry. I do like your enthusiasm however.
Here's an update... The box did well in testing and is now in service. The suspects are happily in their new home. The blueberry clone is looking good. Expecting that will fill out nicely. The northern lights is a really nicely shaped little shrub from seed. Really hoping it's a girl.
Think I'm going to order the fox farm nutrient 3-pack, and soon. That stuff seems well-regarded.
I'll keep you posted!...

btw, you'll want to add at least one blue bulb, preferably 2, mj
wants both colors of light throughout it's life, just in different
proportions at different times of year, or at different stages
of growth as for all us indoor growers, lol.
(you want more blue during veg and more red during flower but
you definitely want both during both stages)
oh yeah, Zigzagman is right, if you wait until they are 15 inchs before
you flip them, you WILL run out of vertical space, i started some at 8
inchs and they are at 24 now after 3.5 weeks flowering.

Thanks for all the input and kind words, friends. Here's another brief but hopeful update. If you check the pics, I think we have girls...
I've gotta agree: the top loader is the way to go for keeping it light-tight. Wow justanotherbozo, our boxes are very similar. Great minds think alike, eh?
I'm hoping vertical space won't be a big concern. I'm thinking a little LST and super-cropping will help keep everything manageable in my space. I've already broken a few over and tied one down to keep them away from the lights, and I still can remove about 10 inches from beneath the pots for added height.
Fox farm trio pack is on the way (Open Sesame, Beastie Bloom, and Cha-ching). Any specific recommendations on those from anyone? Thanks!

Wow! They are looking great! They will really start to take off when you start feeding them those nutes.. I am not using those now, but will likely be doing so in the near future.
For those of you keeping score at home, it looks like a few of my more recent threads have vanished, but no worries. Here's an update...
I've been keeping my girls from heading into the lights by LST and super-cropping. My blueberry seems a little more brittle than NL, and I nearly topped her twice. First aid was applied both times, and she appears no worse for the wear. Perhaps she's just into bondage and wants to be tied down.
Nutes arrived. Fox Farm's Open Sesame is the first course. Early in the going they seem to be responding really well to it. Just got home from a long weekend, and I'm seeing a light dusting of crystals on the girls for the first time. Very exciting!!
Also, I've had a fair amount of these little flying pests. I wasn't thinking they would be much of an issue, but I figure it's best to be rid of them. They're annoying at the very least. I just applied some of Fox Farm's Don't Bug Me, so I'm hoping they will all die soon . Anyone ever use that stuff?
That's should get you up to date. Here are a few pics that were lost. I'll get some newer pics up soon.
