Cool ISO's Latest Adventure....

Been a while since I've done a grow journal....but haven't been growing for the past month or so. After a year straight of growing I needed some time off to get some serious business done, and by mid-Sept. the temps and humidity had dropped enough to make my growing rooms run like "The Sweet Bud Express", so it was time to get back to it!

Since this grow started a month ago it might take a couple posts to get the journal current. PLEASE, feel free to post comments, criticism's, etc. (that is GreenPassion's version of "on-the-job" training..)

I received a gift recently from a local fellow who has been a private strain breeder for many a year...plenty of seeds from each of many different strains. I hope to include some of those strains in my next grow. The strains grow here came from my own crosses, or were seeds from local benefactors.

In this grow are 2 strains of my own, one the Purple Willie bred by another friend, and a ATF x Purple Kush cross that was the result of a lightly hermied PK that had one of about 5 flowers on the plant sitting over the top of one of the ATF's colas (actually, it was tight space and they were snuggled up to one another..)..and yep, the she/he did the deed right on her little buds..
In the grow (remaining) are:

4 White Widow x Skunk#1
3 ATF x Purple Kush
3 Purple Willie (Sweet Willie x Grape Ape)
1 remaining Mango x Romulan (1 was male and he has ..expired)

Seeds were soaked overnight in seperate cups of cold lipton tea. The tannin in the tea is said to help prepare the shell of the seed to crack. (At least the pro's say so..LOL).

12 seeds total were started.

Seeds were dried, then placed 1/2" deep in the soil mix in 3" pots. Pots were covered with a section of newspaper to help keep them warm and the light out. The tray they were in was set about 24" below the 4' T-5 fixtures that were running 24/7.

First ones popped their heads up 3 days later on Sept 11th., and a couple more on the 12th:

091208 025.jpg

091208 026.jpg

3 days later (the 15th) they were all above ground (yep..12 fer 12!)

091508 001.jpg

Soil mix was blended in large tub, and contains 50% Fox Farms Ocean Forest, 50% FF Light Warrior + add'l perlite (I like the soil to be light and drain well. This mix holds moisture well for the plants roots, also. Soil pH is 6.4.

It's a good start, and I'll post more tomorrow...

Ok...let's move ahead a few days so I can get this caught up..

Here they are six days later..

092108 002.jpg

They were just a bunch of fat, happy young'uns hangin out together under the T-5's...

By a week later they were all moved up to 6" pots, with the ATFxPK in the 8" pots because they were kicking it in high gear.

092808 001.jpg

And here again after yet another week of vegging. So far just pH'd rainwater and some Liquinox B-1 vitamin ever other feeding.

100508 027.jpg

Soon after this they were repotted again and moved to the flower room, where they are currently vegging along nicely getting 22 hrs. of HPS daily.

Iso - I think you can often if not always tell a good indoor grower by the quality of their workspace.....your pics show a clean, orderly, well spaced grow area. Looking forward to following your new journal as I find you to be a very thoughtful knowledgable grower. Following your thinking seems is a great resource for my own efforts.

Thanks Scott! Fact is I really do try to keep it clean..I'm downright picky about it, too..

Time for an update on these kids. Sorry it took me so long to get back in here...life's got me pretty tied up right now...

I've got some fresh pics, and need some advice on either what is a nute issue or fungus (rust?). Pics in the AM. Night all.

OK, now that sleep had it's way with me I can think again...

So far, of the 12 started, only 1 plant (Mango/Romulan) has declared it's sexual orientation...the rest of them are a bunch of slackers!

All are now re-potted to their final pots (3-4 gal pots), and are languishing in the flower room:

101508 003.jpg

101508 004.jpg

As is obvious, some are doing well, and several are just not "thriving" like they should. There has been an on-going issue with brown spots and yellowing forming on the leaves of some plants. A knowledgable friend said it was "rust" (a fungus apparently that also lives on our outdoor ornamental plants), but they act more like it's a fungus gnat issue...slow, skinny growth and yellowing leaves with brown spots.

I have NOT seen a bunch of gnats flying about...one here and there, maybe, but the ones I saw were small gnats that landed on the soil. Maybe there were 5 gnats (in the whole grow room(s)) I saw over a few days time...but from what I read that is enough. I also gave the flower room a complete wash down with diluted bleach solution (walls, ceiling and floors) before these plants were moved to that room. It IS clean (or was 4 days ago).

It is NOT a nute burn...these plants have had very limited nutes so far, getting only some B-1 to this point. Their next feeding will contain about a 50% nute load of flower/veg nutes. At the moment I'm more concerned with them showing sex and getting this issue under control than the bud process.

So, I treated them with some Serenade on Tues. night, and clipped all the brown spotted leaves off (as best I could). Here they are now, and some new spots showed up last night. Here's a shot of the leaves:

101508 005.jpg
101508 009.jpg

Also have had this NFO in re-veg...and if it is RUST then this is the likely culprit for spreading it around. That is old, re-vegged bud (brown stuff) that shows on this pic. As soon as I can get a few healthy starts off it this plant will pass away and her kids wil go on. I trimmed the heck out of her to get the nasty browned leaves off, and now she looks fairly clean.

101508 011.jpg

New arrivals! A benefactor stopped by and left me 3 little Northern Lights starts. I'll give ya the history of this plant (specifically the Mom it came from) some time later. (can you say...original NL genetics? )

101508 013.jpg

Would apprecaite anyones thoughts on those spots. They got to go...one way or another.

Thanks for sharing that! I had the same thing in the past...but I treated it as a nute burn. Didn't even think of the gnats. Now, I know!

Nice grow you got going...

Peace.

ISO, I have also seen some signs of them. What I did to see if there are any is get some Safers Sticky stix. these yellow gluie paper things, with plastic green spikes which you put them in the dirt and they catch flies, gnats, moths, whatever is flying around, so you know at least if there is a problem. I have been bringing buds into my grow room to dry from outside so I wanted anything brought in to be caught. I just found them in the gardening section. try home depot. I got mine at wallyworld.
