Default E's first indoor grow

Finally. My first indoor grow

Set up

2 30 gal Silite totes- sprayed flat white inside.
24" 4 bulb T5 Light
230 cfm 6" Inline fan - I needed to get a variable speed controller. The
230 cfm was too strong, would have pulled the
leaves off the plant. LOL

I had to spray the outside of the totes with 3 coats of flat black. When I turned the lights on, the totes glowed. Didn't think I could see through grey plastic, but I did. Hope I don't fry the plants. Those T5s pump out the light.

Started germination of 5 Nirvana Papaya (some call it Mango) seeds in paper towels.

Will plant in seed starter soaked with water and Miracle Grow Quick Start to help boost root development.

My soil will be an adaption of Vid's recipe.
40% Hyponex potting soil
30% MG organic potting Soil
30% Perlite
5 lbs Organic Worm Casings
1 cup Organic Bone Meal

Will keep you posted and will get pictures when seedling go into totes

E, just use plain RO water. No miricle grow starter, or you will burn them. Just water hon, until they have lost the first water leaves.

One other question: what is the ph of your water? You must know this or risk problems down the road. My water is very hard and ph is high. I have to buy jugs of water from a water place, RO water.

Peace

Thanks Jangel for all your help.

I have a water purification system in my home. Three part filtering. First is a particulate filter. Second is carbon filter. Third is a deionizing filter. It removes all particulates, chemicals, and heavy metals. Comes out to be about 98% pure. Ph is between 6.9 - 7. Hopefully this will suffice.

That sound just fine, E. But no nutes till those first leaves, the round ones, dry up and fall off. You really will kill them, hon.

Wink Closet Patch

Hey E..I read your new adventure with great interest..I really don't need to grow, my brother takes care of my needs. I just want to..I love it..watching, manicuring,worrying..ahh lets not forget the next to best part..smelling..love that fresh smell..I started my first crop last year while living in oregon on the river..I got them to about 4ft and had to leave the state. My son took over and it was just an ok crop. I now have acess to great seeds..and want to play gardner..lol..I live in a apt..so it is not too cool..Although, I have a very nice closet on my deck. It is well insulated so don't think I have to be concerned about the smell..it even has a locking door..I would like to know the simplest, cheapest way to go. Do I have to have a expensive set-up to be sucessful? Can I use shop lights with special bulbs?..just pondering here..lights,fans,temperture control..hum..just bending your ear alittle..what you think? would not jump right into it, plan for awhile..with all the info on GP, it would be a adventure..gotta grab the gusto, every chance I get..any ideas on this, or maybe I should just scrap it. I just get so excited and happy when I am around my bro's stuff..kinda gives me the wants..lol..don't mind me..I am naturally crazy..

You are not crazy! It is such fun to grow! I just will never be able to stop. Take a look at the links in my signature and then also look at different threads. PM me if you need any info and I can point you in the right direction. More than happy to help you, sweetie. Also, check out the cfl club. E has done a ton of research as well before he started growing. He is a kind soul so I am sure he will help you if you like, so just ask q's and we will chime in.

BUT don't do it in his grow journal, that is just deregare.

Peace

Default E's first grow

Hey Natural Lady,
I went with about the cheapest way to get started so I could get experience before going bigger. I got the Silite 30 gal totes at Walmart for about $10.00 each. The light was the most expensive. I went with a T5 from HidHut. It was a little pricey. It is also very bright. May be overkill for a tote, probably could have done CFLs as well. I went that way because I will incorporate it into a bigger cabinet later. The cheapest way on lights would be to go to Home Depot and pick up two 3 or 4 light bulb fixture depending on your tote area. You will use CFL bulbs in those fixtures. I got a 230 cfm fan, from HidHut for ? I think about 15.00,but that fan is way too strong for a tote box I found out. The 100 cfm is about 10.00. I was really surprised at the quality of these fans when I got it. I picked up the paint for the totes at Walmart. They were the cheapest at 2.99 a areosol can. 2 cans of white primer for plastic (very important) 4 cans of flat white.
Use Videoman's soil recipe. You can get every thing in 20 pound bags instead of the 40 pound to save money. I have a worm bin since I compost all organic waste so I don,t know what worm casing would cost, but the soil will be another 20.00 and the bone meal was 6.00. It will go a long way.You can pick up cheap ph and water meters at Home Depot for another 8.00 each These are probe types. Starters until you can afford better ones that run around 80.00 + I already had a water purification system. so count on buying water. Distilled at the least - Walmart for 1.99 / gal. I would want more control of my grow area. So I would do it inside instead of a outside closet even if it locks. I think you could get into this for about 150.00. The lights are going to be your biggest cost. I don,t think that a shop light would give you the amount of lumens that you need. If you go with the CFL / tote box there is a thread " DIY Grow Totes" that is very informative. I hope this helps.
Peace and happy growing

Feel free to PM me with any questions. I don,t have all the answers but I can find out if I need to. We can learn together.

Default E's first grow

Hey guys,
I think I need to go to Vegas. I germed 5 seeds and all 5 popped. Not bad odds. I hope that I have the same odds when it comes to sexing. Seedlings are under CFLs until tomorrow. Then I switch to T5s.
