Rep Power: 5 | | Dave's indoor patch: first grow
Hey peeps!
This is my first grow project, and as i'm already up and growing, I thought it'd be a good idea to do a grow journal to document my progress.
I'm growing for personal use, because I like making and growing things (I have a small regular garden as well), and I'd like to be self-sufficient. I started by buying 6 purp hybrid clones. I'm growing hydroponically, using coco as a medium. I started with a 24" T5 with 4 bulbs, full spectrum, and just bought a used 400 w HID to use for flowering. I'm using Van De Zwaan Cocos A/B for nutes, and am watering by hand right now, planning on setting up a timered drip system.
My grow space is elevated, but underneath the stairs going up to our units. I live in San Francisco, in a 2 unit house, shared with upstairs renters. The house is fairly new, so electricals and venting are modern. The space is about 3 1/2 feet wide by 8 feet tall and very deep, so I just cordoned off the back, and am in the process of making it closet sized, about 3 feet deep. I'm keeping it semi-stealth because security isn't really an issue.
I just started the flower cycle on Halloween, and am busy adding stages to my grow room. Will post more info as I go along.
Meanwhile, here's a pic of my patch...so far, so good!

Dave,
My room is about the same as yours. On my first grow ever thing was fine until flowering. I had some bag seed and it smelled like a shrunk was is the house. I thought the smell was contained to the basemet until the neighbor mention to me if there were any skunks around. Well I pushed the panic button, I sealed the room and put fiber glass insulation between the floor joists to seal the basement off from the adjacent town homes and got some ona blocks. I do have a carbon filter as well and all is fine now. So what are you doing for the smell?

Thanks, peeps! It's definitely a work in progress. Joe, that goes for the venting as well. So far, I just bought a roll of 3 mil poly and made a tent structure out of it, so that it wraps up the walls and across the ceiling, and is stapled in place. Right now, i've just got a small fan blowing on the plants, and open air exchange out of the bottom 2-3 feet, where I keep the poly folded up. It's not yet stinky, so i'm ok for now, but the next step i'm planning will be to add a 8" passive air intake tube, and a 4" inline fan for outtake. I'm thinking about going DIY for the charcoal filter. How big a fan did you use, and how many fans do you have?

Room temperature is pretty constant, at 70-72º, humidity is normally around 60%, however, yesterday I had a little shocker--I was down there when the dryer was running upstairs, and humid heat was pouring in the 8" duct, and humidity was buried at 100%!!!! Fortunately, all I had to do was pull my tent structure back one stud, making the room smaller, but putting the duct outside. The plastic seems to keep the humidity out of the room.
I also moved the T5 fixture to the top stage, and hung my 400w HID light in the flower stage underneath. It's a used Hydrofarm unit with 12" hood. Unfortunately, it's not running yet, b/c I have to pick up a power cord tomorrow.
The girls are shooting up nicely, and i'll try to post a pic tomorrow.

Here's a pic from today. Around 12" tall. They've been shooting up and filling out, so I think it's all good so far...
I'm going to start with the HID on Sat, one week into the cycle. I'm going to have to repot on Sat, b/c I checked the roots and they're filling the pot, but not totally rootbound yet. Here's an individual plant shot to show more detail--it's showing a lot of underside, b/c of the fan blowing from one side;)
Let me know what you think!

Ooops, minor glitch last night--I tried out my new timer for the first time, and forgot to check to see if it turned the light off. I went down early this AM before the turn-on time, and it was still on. I'm planning on getting back on cycle tonight, but did leaving it on all night mess anything up with the flower cycle?

Me too--it's nice to be a virgin at *something* again innit?
Starting from seeds is hardcore--I 'cheated' by starting with clones;)
I just repotted tonite, going with 1-gallon mesh pots. Makes 'em look even bigger! Pics to come tomorrow, after I hook up my HID.

The girls are doing nicely in their new 1 gal mesh pots. I added a 4" exhaust duct, and it immediately improved the air circulation. They are still on T5, as my used HID isn't working, so it's back to the dood who sold it to me for fixin.
Here's a top view pic, showing nice progress:
billybud, it's a mixture of maui wowie and labrador, man;)
