5 strain grow - just beginning...

there is hope for every new person to growing it just takes time and the will to learn what is needed to grow a good crop. as i learned in my many years of growing what works for one person don't always work for anouther grower some people have good luck with growing hydro where as others have better luck growing in soil.

Time for a good update to the thread...many, many things have changed in my grow room!

First, I had been real unhappy with the performance of the ebb/flo system, so, I sacked it and went back to my "roots"...good old soil. The three plants that were in the ebb/flo system were doing poorly, even though from everything I could tell by the conditions were optimum.

Now, those plants are starting to kick it in gear, just 2 days after being taken from hydro and being put into soil. Soil mix is Hyponex potting soil with 40% perlite added, nothing else. I will feed them Plant Marvel nutrients, but next grow will be organic nutrients in soil (clones are still waiting to give birth to roots...but that's another paragraph).

Clones just didn't want to root in the bubble cloner...I must be freakin' cursed by the hydro-demon twins.. So, the clones came out of the bubble cloner, got the 45's re-cut and cleaned up, dipped in Roottech gel and set into Rapid Rooter plugs in the good old humidity dome. I have the heat mat set to 72 F. NOW I'll get some damn roots!

In the meantime, however, please enjoy the "side show" while the main event gets it's act together...

First up is a little blackberry that had just enough of a root for me to move it to the ebb/flo system. It sat there for 2 weeks and didn't do squat. Swapped it into a 4" pot with soil and it's perked up and grown a few new leaves and doing well. Color has improved too, and I didn't think this one would make it..



Next up is another tough little gal...she started as a cloned bud...basically no leaves save the original sugar leaves..rooted it, dropped it in soil and it took off...




Next is the Sweet Willie that was just flailing in the ebb/flo...skinny stalks, almost no root growth and what was there wasn't healthy. Now, it's perked up in just 2 days...now it has a future!




This ATF is vegging well. I have been feeding it a 1/4 dose of veg nutes, and it has greened up nicely and I've taken a number of clones, including the top (which promptly wilted like mad...LOL).



This Blackberry was another one that took 30 days to root in the cloner, and so it's a ways behind...still, it's rooted very quickly into the soil (just 2 days ago it moved from ebb/flo to soil). I need to turn this one into a Mom.



Here's the veg table now...BIG change in a week's time...no more ebb/flood tray, no 40 gal res and the table is dropped 4" to allow for pot height.



If you check the last pics I posted of the table and the plants you will see how far these plants have come in just a short time. I think I've had enough hydro for awhile, except I'll be happy to do the DWC for Fred in the upcoming CHALLENGE Grow.

Time for a quick update...

My clones finally decided to get rooting (took 6 days after going into the humidity dome in RR's...after being in a bubble cloner for 3 weeks with no success).

On the table are 1 PowerPlant, 1 SweetWillie, 2 ATF's, 2 BlackBerry, 3 Purple Kush and last night I added 1 ea. NFO clone with small roots, but 5 of 'em (a fav daytime smoke..). These are at various stages, with the ATF's only having been in soil for a week now nad have grown well and taking off. Same with the Kush's...








Plan to veg up to about 13"-15" max, then flower.

In flower are 3 Ebb/flo PowerPlants that averaged about 14" going in. I am guessing the talles (back one) is about 22" now...and looks like it's Nuthin' but BUD.... Havind to build a custom rack so I can cross tie string supports for them tonight after lights on...their stems are still small, but the bud's and cola's ain't! Smells like some of the better PP I've grown..can't wait for 'em to finish!





They are currently at 700 ppm Aqua Flores (Canna) and 5.7 Ph in the 30 gal res. Has been very stable, and unchanged for 3 weeks now...all is steady and doing fine. I'll change the res next weekend to a high dose of the carbs (SWEET) and let them gorge themselves for a week or two, then flush for a couple days before harvest.

It amazes me how much those buds have grown in just the 11 days since I took the last pics (took these yesterday). Compare the pics from my post on the 5th..Oye!

Made 4 stand-alone corner posts today, and tonight I'll get in there and get these kids properly supported.

Been VERY unseasonably HOT here the last couple days. High temps in the 90's, and the heat/humidity has been a battle, especially in my flower room during the day. Hopefully it will be cooler today and tonight.

I decided to switch to a 8 lamp, T-5 fixture for vegging. The 600W is great, but it's too much heat and wattage for me to pay for right now, and by going T-5 I can get more lumens on the plants. My HID fixture, when within 18" of the plant tops, does not provide light to the whole 2' x 4' table, and plants really start leaning to go to the light. The T-5 fixture covers a 24" X 48" space...light from directly above to all the plants...which is a good thing!

I also thought the girls my be growing balls at the end of flower...but it turns out its just glands swelling....as martha stewart says "its a good thing"
