Default new 600 watt hps bulb turned milky white. why?

I just bought a used 600 w XtraSun 600w HPS Ballast and a brand new GE Lucolox 600w HPS bulb.

I turned the light on once to test for about 3 minutes, then off for 15 or so and back on for 10 or 15.

Upon turning the light off, the bulb turned milky white inside. aslmost as if a chemical was released inside the bulb.

my 400w never did this on either bulb so Im trippin.

is everything OK or do I need to investigate?

Did you remove the protective plastic from the bulb and clean any fingerprints off the bulb?

there was no protective film on the bulb, it came in a cardboard box typical for hps bulbs Ive bought before.

I never touched the glass with my bare hands. I used a clean (just washed and folded) sweatshirt to "clean" the bulb just in case anything was on it. I then put the bulb back in the box with the connector sticking out enough to screw the bulb in using my hands on the box itself.

So this evidentally was the new bulb. Contact who you bought it from mine have never done that. As long as you are sure you removed any plastic that might have been on it.

contact the place where you bought this one, see that they take it back and replace it with a new one. this is some weird defect caused by the manufacturer, so shouldn't be to your disadvantage.

thanks everyone for their useful input.

i still carry a little paranoia about retail shops not being good with returns/exchanges.

I now at least feel better about this local shop.

Just got denied this morning because of lost packaging (xmas present) from radio shack, so ya never know.

Thanks again!

forgot to add that I just got back from making the exchange with no hassles.

Did the shop offer any info as to what happened with the bulb? Just curious.

Default I'll bet

Either the main bulb or the gas envelope leaked, educated guess, IMO

Well, I took the bulb back and the shop owner just said he'd seen bad bulbs before. nothing like this one but went upstairs and grabbed a new bulb and off I went.

I did send an inquiry to Hydrofarm regarding what would/could happen to a bulb from a bad ballast. response below.

"
Unless the bulb is physically broken the gas won't escape. Even if there is a leak and the gasses escaped the bulb would immediately burn out. The ballast should not cause this. It is more likely an old bulb or one that was defective to begin with.
Hope this helps.

Everything seems to be in order now. Just waiting for the newly cut clones to grow up enough for flowering.

I cannot wait to see the difference in the 2 strains I grew under a 400 hps in comparison to the new 600.
