Default HPS for a small cabinet

I was wondering would a 100 watt hps work for a flowering cabinet grow that is 24 in x 10 in? Would it produce too much heat? And how far must the light be from the plant? The closet is only about 3 feet tall so I know that the tops of the plants will probably hit the roof, and I don't want them to get burned. Right now I'm using cfl's but was thinking of changing to get the better lumens: watts, and for light penetration.

with a space of less than two square feet I would stick with CFL....I don't see many HID less than 250 or 150w if you did find a 100w hps I think it would give you enought lumens for that space though I would be more comfortable with a 150w hps for that space (not in terms of heat but lumens)

can't you set up your cfls so that you are getting plenty of side lighting down into such a small canopy?

you should go with CFL's in that area as in this case youcan provide more lumines with more cfls and alot less heat ... unless you plan on alot of ventilation in the area then go with hps and a cfl or to for side light if you can

there are HPS bulbs with as little as 50W but it doesn't make much sense to work with anything below 400W as the lum/W ratio of the smaller once is either the same or inferior to CFLs.

so for that little space i would use CFLs for sure - but watch out as they get hot as well!

Do a search for 150 watt hps club. Google it, lots of folks getting great results with 150's. It takes more attention to detail to get good results with under 400w, but it's entirely possible, don't listen to these naysayers! Good luck!
