I have a 150w HPS and am wondering how far it needs to be if i have seedlings?

as a general rule you put your hand an inch or so above your plant then raise and lower the light till the light hitting your hand is just a lil on the warm side then raise it an inch or 2 just to be on the safe side

Is it air cooled?

Seeding you dont want that light any closer that 12" till they have 3 sets of alterating leafs.then put your hand under it and adjust it.At first it will be to strong for baby seedlys. PEACE

all of the above.......in my opinion though any hid lighting is overkill for seedlings. they will do fine under floros or cfls for weeks. i say this cauuse they are cheaper to run han hids and lees elecrticity equals less attention. i only use hids for a quick veg(4to 8 weeks) then switch my bulbs for flowering. the only benifit from starting seeds with hids is the nodes will be closer, but the same effwect can be achieved in my experiance from keeping 4 ft floro tubes( 1 warm white and cool white) within an inch of your seedlings.same result.. less of a burden on your wallet, then ya got the hps to flower with.....again just my opinion, but thats what id do with what you got, plus maybe 60 $ american for some floro fixtures and bulbs....

Yea i see where your coming from Kpin, floro's can do a pretty good job for vegging for smaller amounts of time. they give off less heat which means less stretch and tighter nodes which were all looking to achieve. plus....with 4 footers you can easily fit a bunch of clones/seedlings under there for a month or so. just my 2 cents...good luck!@
