Rep Power: 102 | | HID's on Ebay...Too Good to be True?
Peoples, peoples, peoples,
Is it safe? eBay noids me out and I'm pretty sure I remember someone saying that the Feds track HID purchases from eBay. Is this correct or is it just a rumor like most things you hear?
Their are some sellers that have great deals on HID lights there so I'd like to know the skinny on the situation.
Thanks,
-the Corsican.

could be a trap or could be a good deal -- it's a total crapshoot.. Kinda like craigslist

Thanks.
I never ordered anything from either place so I'm new to the whole deal. Life is a crap shoot so I guess I shouldn't expect eBay to be any different. If I do go that route I'll stick with known quantities, (Gold medal top sellers with 100% approval rating from their customers) I don't want to fool around with "Fly By Night" (Great Rush Album!) con-artists.

It all depends, I'd say. If you are legal or, at least, in a legal state, it's not likely to be an issue. Otherwise, ya might wanna be careful. The thing is, though, I bet there are simply too many to worry about people buying one or two lights. I bet they would only be interested in large orders. That's just my gut feeling, though. I have no proof or evidence of any sort.

I bought my first HID's on Ebay. Both were used and from private individuals. That was several years ago, so if the fed is investigating me for it, they are taking their sweet-ass time about it.

Thanks both Mike & Charlie, good information and I will definitely take it seriously. The larger orders would probably be what the Feds would look at if they are looking at all. The deals I've seen are excellent, they just blow away most of what's out there. Some of the sellers are popular Hydro Shops anyway but they offer better deals on eBay.

I purchased 6 Lumatek 600's off of ebay.....no problems.
I AM legal....but even if I wasn't I refuse to live in complete paranoia. I did that for about 10 years and it wasn't any fun for the most part.
the biggest tip offs, IMO....would be SMELL radiating from your grow when the UPS/FEDEX guy shows up....or boxes marked with "Pot growing equipment..direct from the Hydro store" (yes, I'm exxagerating) arriving on your doorstep.
I'd say another important factor could be whether or not you have criminal record for cultivation/transport/manufacture/etc. ***IF***...and it's a BIG if, IMO, IF the Feds are watching these purchases they would more than likely go after the peeps with records first because they can PROVE they have involvement. No record? How the Hell do they know what yer doing with that light??
I wouldn't worry. Find a good shop/person to deal with and go with it.
good luck

Excellent feedback guys, thank you.
I figured it would be wise to go with the trusted sellers. Why fool around with unknowns when you can deal with well established sellers? Besides, there are a few options opening up to me that will help security wise.
Thanks for the direct experience feedback brothers, it is seriously appreciated.

Ya might try calling jason @ HIDHUT and see if he'll match the prices or will help you out in some fashion. I know he ships discreetly, FWIW.
Another option is if you know anyone who own a business....tell them you can save on shipping if you have it sent to them and see if they will accept the shipment for you. If it isn't marked they will have no idea what it is...and most folks will just say "Sure..no problem. We get stuff EVERYDAY from UPS/FEDEX/etc"....
again....good luck

I ordered a SunSystem light off ebay a few months back and came no problem. Shipped discretely no problems.
As long as youre smart with who you buy from and arent running a warehouse sized operation you should be fine receiving your products and not attracting attention.
I dont think there are any sellers our there marking their boxes YOU CAN GROW GREAT BUD WITH THIS LIGHT IN THIS BOX hahaha. at least i would hope not. and the higher starred sellers are typically legit. plus they have a good fraud prevention, $ back stuff if you do get screwed typically. Ive had a few sellers in the early ebay days screw me but ended up even in the end.

I order All ranges of things to do with my gardens from Ebay...Never had a problem.. After multi-purchases from people you get to trust them .. but look for people with high positive feedback... and read some of the feedback.. I think the problem is PayPal.. most ebayers use it and PayPal has all ready turned finacial info over to the feds.. I like to use people who dont use Paypal.. but on ebay thats almost impossible unless you contcat the seller and tell them your concerns.... the cool sellers will give you another meens in wich you can pay...but there are some awsome deals on ebay..

Cool deal.
More people who have used eBay lately and have not had any problems. It's most likely the root I'm going to take. I'll give HID a call and see what's what, thanks.

I think I might have to look for my light on ebay too. I've never ordered anything growing related but have ordered other things off of there, and had no problems. I only buy from people that have real high ratings.

I have sold on Ebay over ten years, I worry about Paypal records. When the Feds do crackdown on internet commerce or gardening supplies of an herbal nature , Paypal will most assuredly be the first to have to comply. Has not happened yet but the handwriting is on the wall. Ebay owns Paypal.
I bought my HID's off of an Ebay seller but NOT through Ebay. See if the seller you are looking at has a website, the good sellers also have a brick and mortar business too. Contact them via their website and not through Ebay internal mail about the equipment they are selling on Ebay and most will sell at that price, they will not have to pay 8 percent Ebay fees.
You can buy a charged debit card at Walmart with cash to do the deal, I do this for seed purchases, again you are not creating a paper trail leading to your front door.
Lastly, with Wally World debit card in hand, 800 number at the ready, I do the deal.
I received a pair of boxes day before yesterday from HTGSupply, plain box, shipped UPS and arrived in two days after contacting them. I received worm castings, guanos and another HPS 400 watt light and there is no record of the transaction on Ebay, Paypal or my computer.
Peace~!
Pete

Hey Pete,
Good advice all around.
Hi Icabod,
I think we may have bought from the same seller on eBay. I bought a 400w HPS (Lumatek) HID with Bulb and an XtraSun reflector for $209.00, free shipping also. The guy was selling Lumatek digital ballasts with (you're choice) Cool tubes, XtraSun reflectors and Plantmax Bulbs, all included. He had a great reputation and it was a pretty good deal all around. I would have probably went for the cool tube also if I had already purchased my inline fan and carbon scrubber. But my cash is limited and I can always buy or make a cool tube in the future when I get my inline fan. Shipping was quick and discrete so I'd say it was a good experience overall. I didn't use PayPal.

I've seen ads in craigslist here that I wouldn't touch with a 10 foot pole. (Or longer.) They have included phrases like "can be used to grow tomatoes, herbs, spices, and even marijuana." That screamed "trap" to me, especially here.
It's harder to use a safe address / safe payment info with e-bay. You either open yourself up to getting ripped off, or your attempt at anonymity gives the impression you're trying to rip someone else off.
But you can get a good deal. If I were going to do it, I would have a friend buy it for me.
