Rep Power: 89 | | convert Sunburst to remote ballast? if so how?
Hello. Thats it. I got a decent deal on a 400w hps hydrofarm sunburst setup.
Because of the total weight of the system, Id like to chop this one up and make it a remote ballast.
Any help or links?
Thanks for reading...

dude you just need to unhook the mogal from the reclector then put a lenght of extention cord wire between the two but you wont have a reflector you could cut the ballest section off and unscrew the mogal (socket) but its probably easier to buy a new reflector or just deal with the weight DO NOT do this if your not confident with electrical

Im sure I can handle that. I removed the old power cable from this unit as the ground connection had been cut/removed from the wall plug and replaced it with a 12 ft ext cord.
Should I use wire nuts for both connections on this too? ('too' meaning the power cables used wire nuts)
And would 16 / 14 /12 ga. be better for the extension? (im guessing Ill just try matching whats existing.

Rep Power: 106 | | you can do it
if you look behind the filter u can see Ive used a 400wt hps exterior commercial light and done something similar just by adding some extension cord wire i got at lowes ,also if your interested i picked up the filter for 75$ at my local grow store it cost a bit more than a diy carbon scrubber but much simpler it will do a 4x4x4 foot room and i,ve used it for 4 grows so far and still does not need the charcoal changed quite yet

*edited to say man the 2nd pic sucks..Ill take more clear ones if anyone is interested in what kind of frankenstein crapI came up with*
just wanted to update and say I finally made the change.
the ballast
the finished result.
Anything I should worry about concerning the wire nuts? should I cover them in electrical tape?
Eventualy Id like a better Hood, but for probably another 3 weeks this'll have to do.

As long as the wire nuts are tight, and no bare wire is exposed, you don't need any tape.

Thanks for the input guys and gals.
FYI*When I was at Home Depot, I made sure to get the thickest wire I could. Ended up with 14ga. 12 ft. extension cord. It is as thick or thicker than the original wire.

Just wanted to post an update. I recently purchased a Hydrofarm Xtrasun 6" Air Cooled reflector from one of my local hydro shops. For $89+tax, I cant complain.
I had to get the 3 wire to 3 prong female adaptor to connect to the ballast so the reflector would plug in directly. Making the connection was just as easy as connecting the previous extension cable. 3 wires, 2 wire nuts and a phillips screwdriver for the ground.
Ive included a pic of the old home made contraption and the new one in action.
Thanks again to those that chimed in.
