Lightbulb ** 400-Watt Talk & Shots **

I was getting tired of the same post sitting in the fore of this forum. Not much posting/commenting going on here.

So why not start a new thread?

This one hopefully will be ongoing.

I myself use a 400W light. Thats the topic of this thread.

Pictures of 400W light produced bud....Questions about 400W lights specifically and just general conversations weighing pros/cons of the 400W lights will go here. Maybe after a few months we can have a multi page thread.

I encourage other light users (1000, 600, 250 Watt) to start a thread for each perspective light.

So.....

Show what you grow.

I'll add a few pics in a few days. I just updated my grow journal and dont want to be redundant.

I use a 400Wt. IN my small grow space I think that is my maximum before heat really becomes an issue. Plus electrical usage on that circuit is also a constraint. actually I was quite shocked by how well the plants grow under these myself.

400W is one of the best, Mr Lizard. It doesnt generate the heat of the bigger lights and can go closer to plant tops.

Using 2 or 3 400W lights in some instances is better than using a 1000 or 600. They cover more area and can get closer to the plants.

Venting with ducting/inline fan is optional with a 400. Its almost mandated with a 1000. It saves money on the extras.

1000's kick butt.....but have their downside too.

Split closet....1 - HPS, 1 - MH 400W.

Right on Blood,I have two 400 watt.Blubs are cheater and the cost to run them too.My DWC bucket in the closet, the light is about 8" from the top of the plant. The light is air cooled and two fans blowing in the closet. The closet stays 72 to 76 degree with the lights on.Small places the 400 watts are great. If I could grow in a 10'x10' or bigger I would get the 1000 watt. PEACE

Hey I have a question for you all what is your average yield per crop under a 400wt ? My first try I estimate between 3-4 OZ's. Is this typical? I am sure that the average may be somewhat higher. Anybody actually grow a monster under one of these?

Default A monster is uder the 400watter

I dont know what the yeilds are under 400 or 600 or 1000,I think that has to do with the genetics of the plant it self and alot of other conditions too.I have a large girl in DWC right now the stem is about 1"1/4 inches around and she is taller than me at 6'foot.Looks like about 4 or 5 weeks left. She has out growen the closet depth of 2'.Veg her under cfls for 4 weeks than 400 MH,and now 400HPS. The longer you veg the bigger they get.The 400 watt is cost effective for me and I like that.I would think in perfect conditions in all light food genetics water air movement you could get 1/2lb or more from one plant.Look at what they do outside on there own. They get good soil and food and light they reach for the sky. Hope that helps a little. PEACE PS here's a few pixs of her in the closet.I know I will be tieing her up some.

Been working on a concept for a while that will allow me to properly build the system of my dreams....Thus far it consits of 800 watts ( 2x 400) per 24 plants....Seems like to many plants for the space right??? Well actualy you only have 6 plants per 12 sq ft....I will explain in detail how this is possible.....Vertical growing, maximize space, maximize light penetration and efficiency.
the idea is simply this:
- A square with two levels of shelves.
-Each shelf holds 3 plants (12 per shelf) 2gallon buckets.
- 48 " cool tube located in the center exactly 20" from all sides.
- 2 400 watt bulbs are installed one at 48 " one at 24" ( light allows for 3 feet maximum height) 1.5 feet in both directions up and down
- A thin mesh chicken wire tube is created to wrap around the inside perimeter of the square..This keeps plants away from the light and also allows complete control of plants from outside the unit ( unlike most vertical growing systems.) The wire can also help to securely fasten heavy buds from falling over.
- the light tube is cooled of course...

the concept above allows. 2 400 watt bulbs to adequately supply light to 24 plants. It allows plants to rest no more than 18" from the light source. It also allows the canopy to circle the mesh and keep all the light inside the canopy as opposed to letting it get out...

A friend has a similar system he built based on the octagon, because of light penetration and light being blasted from top to bottom of the plant he yields over 1 gram per watt( commercial strains).60-.85 grams for connoseiuer strains......1 circle of 24 yileded him almost 3 lbs last time with a strain called SDPK ( sour diesel /purple kush) 3lbs off 1200 watts....(He added a 400 watt bulb inside a 60" tube).....the only difference in my system to his is that my pots will remain mobile and I will have the cage to protect the plants....If he wasnt careful heavy buds would fall into the light tube and burn..........

What do you guys think about this way to maximize the heck out of a 400 watter

Hey sophisto, just reading your post and thinking "hey, now that sounds familiar". Actually that pretty much describes my system, except I run alot more shelves. Pretty much a side lit sea of green. This works so well that I quit using 1000 watt`rs all together. why bother when you can get a pound or better out of a 400 without the associated heat and cost of 1000 watt lights (i`m cheap ). I run 3 400`s in my setup, and 6 shelves 8 inches apart, made out of 6" steel track from Home Depot. i don`t spend alot of time vegging the plants and the yield is 3 lb or better depending on the strain as you say. nice to know that others are unlocking the potential of the 400. Get two of these going side by side on a flip and your smilin` all the way. Gotta love it!

I use a 400w hortilux eye super hps. Here's a couple of mine from last years grow. I hope you like them. There's a couple extreme close ups in my gallery if you want to see the massive amount of trichomes a 400w can make happen. I hope you like them.

Cool 430 sunargo

a 430 w is the best spectrum output. For years I ran two in the f room with two ballasts. Change the two ballasts for a 1000w and wire the same two 430 w bulbs. The results are impressive but the bulbs last 6-9 months. Some digital ballasts have adjustable watts to dim or increase juice.
