I'm thinking of buying a 1000 watt light.
I presently use 2 400 watt lights, both with magnetic ballasts.
I would love to hear from people who have made the purchase, what brand do you recommend, your thoughts on magnetic ballast vs digital? There are pros and cons for both.
What about the hood you choose/recommend? Is yours air cooled?
Is 6" outlets enough, or do you need the 8" outlets?
I am leaning more towards one of the sealed, air cooled hoods, so I can utilize co2 into my grows again.
Any input is much appreciated!
Feel free to include links if you got em.
Peace

i use 2 400 watters too, 1 MH Hortilux Super Bulb, and 1 HPS Hortilux it works better to cover the area of my garden, adds a nice balanced mix of light, and doesnt get as hot as the center of a 1000 watter. If you have the space and the height, i would say go for it. However 400 and 600 watt lamps are more efficient in terms of lumens per watt.
I keep a bathroom vent fan on top of, in between my 2 hoods that vents the air outside.
If i had the 1000 watt, i would prob get a glass tube with a horizontal shade with as little folds as possible. double parabolic shades are usually the most effective with a hammered aluminum of flat white finish.

i used a 1k..but have found that i would rather use 600watt degi ballests....i dont recomend getting any glass covered hood cause the glass frags light an you lose spec an lumens...the econo wing hoods work just fine...hidhut has good 600degi hps systems....the only real avantage with the 1k's is canopy penitration with bigger plants...peace

I love my 1000watt hps.. I have the solarmax1 bulb which turns it into a 4oomh and a 600hps in the same bulb. I finish the last couple of weeks with a 1000hps. They love that bulb. I dont vent mine just the whole 12x12 room. In a smaller space i would use the air cooled system and keep the ballast in a seperate room.

Peace | This is an area that I have a lot of experiance in as I have tryed many differant reflectors. The Sun System Cool Sun Reflector IMHO is the ONLY way I would fly. The coverage is fantactic!
The Cool Sun Reflector Features - Air passes easily through both ends of the reflector directly over the lamp for maximum inline air cooling.
- 95% reflective German aluminum offers excellent reflectivity and diffusion properties.
- Tempered glass is included with every fixture.
- Rugged and durable electro-galvanized steel housing.
- Socket assembly and lamp cord are built into the reflector, no wireing required.
- Prolongs life of expensive H.I.D Lamps
- 6 inch air cooled fittings are integrated into the design of the reflector-no need for separate fittings.
- White powdercoating provides a rust resistant, clean appearance.
- Sturdy chrome wire hangers make for easy hanging.
- Sealed reflector won't draw air from inside the room, CO2 stays in place!
Dimensions: 20.5in long x 23.5 in wide x 8.25 in tall SSCOOLSUN.jpg SSCOOLSUNINSIDE.jpg
It is 160 bucks but its worth it!

As to the ballasts, I have never bought a digi ballast I stick with magnetic. From my reserach they are not worth the extra money. I have heard horror stories on a lot of them. The biggest advantage they have is they supposedly use less power However I have read many times that yes they do run cheaper but it less ten 10 bucks a year! For that I will stick to my mags.
As to 1000 w vs 400w If I am going to grow indoors it takes the most light you can give it. Study after study prove more light = MORE BUD!!
My 2 cents. Hope your feelin better Vid! |

Love by digital ballast. It has lived up to everything that was promised. I have had it from over 2 years now and not one complaint.

I have almost the same model...(same brand tho)...as Fred mentioned, but I have yet to ventilate it properly....does get really warm around it(1000w, like an 8 degree hotter difference in a large room)....so, it is almost a given that ventilation is needed.
But, I use it because it feels and looks like I brought the sun inside with me.
