GE energy smart CFLs they are the huge twisty ones you can now get the 42w=150w at wal-mart in the bulb section for $9 a bulb you can also find them for $10 at home depot or lowes. the ge's are in the low kelvin rating (RED spectrum = >10,000 kelvin and under< ) great light for the price and light 2700 lumens .

4-42watt "G.E" CFL's have about the same light out put as a 600watt HPS

I have one of those DIY Rubbermaid growboxes, and I was wondering about lighting it. Everyone seems to mention smaller wattages for vegging and more watts for flowering. Is that something that would make sense? Also, I've read people saying that they use 4 blue spectrum and two red spectrum lights in their growboxes for veg, and 2 blue and 4 red for flowering. Is that necessary, or would it be better to have all blue for veg and all red for flowering?

Hey thenoffya, you know, I'm sitting here thinking about your question.....
I have always flowered with hid lighting.

My problem with cfl's is that they are so concentrated to one (small) area of the plant, and 2 1000 lumen light does not really equaly 2000 lumens, it equals 2, 1000 lumen lights.

Moving on, I have a plant in veg right now, with one vegging bulb on one side, and one flowering bulb on the other.

I wish I was using all vegging bulbs.

I hope that helps you buddy.

i would say go with the 40/60 or even 30/70 mix of light if you can becuose the point is to give the plant the most natural lighting with still giving yourself a little bit of an edge.
but that is just my opinion and in veg as long as you have the lumen's then you should be fine me myself i not only have them above the plant i hang them on the sides to .

I agree strongly there but i also through in some 26w for both fruiting and growth stages it is a medium kelvin temperature ! (Mixed spectrum's )
but definatly listen to the Shaman for he is wise in the way of the CFL! .. lol
