Default What do you CFL experts think of this deal?

Here is the merchants E-Bay listings...

http://cgi.ebay.com/500W-Fluorescent...5810QQihZ015QQ

And here is their regular shop...

http://www.growwurks.com/

Rather than buy a 5-10 CFL's, would two of these put out more output?

I was thinking of buying their special (on their regular web site):

1000 Watt CFL
- Qty 2 (Combined output wattage)
Uses 65 watts of electricity but puts out 500 watts (x2)

* Uses 65 watts of electricity but puts out 500 watts! (x2)
* These lights retail for about $42 each + eventually tax.
* Color Temperature: 6500 degrees Kelvin (blue light spectrum). Which are great for thick vegative growth!

$31.34 (for 2 pack)

Cheaper than buying multiple bulbs but is their enough light being pushed out? And if so, how many would one use for flowing? Or, could I get by with one for veg. and two for flowing?

Can you CFL experts help a girl out?

hi Baywatch, how are you. 2x500W sounds great to me.Av been using 2x200W or even 125+200W and it worked very well especially in veg.IMHO a lot depends on the growing space you use.Contained space helps keeping the light concentrated on your plants and as CFL lights dont produce heat you can keep them very close to plants.I start sprouting seeds in soil with 125W and add more after the first week of growing.I also flowered plants with CFL, this time 3X200W red.The result was very good (for my needs ).The only problem is CFLs dont produce the same number of lumens as HPS so light cant penetrate lower branches so well especially if you`ve got many plants on small space and you dont go for SoG. I try to use screen for flowering to help lower branches get more light. You can see how my 6 plants grow under 325W CFL on the pix .Two of them were removed before flowering. The final result from two plants is also on the picture it was Orange Bud and White Widow
any other questions - just ask
take care

Thumbs down

It is NOT a 500w bulb...it is actually a 65w (500 equivilent watt)
it puts out the light of five hundred regular incandecent light watts (think about 8 table lamp bulbs)

not a 500w HID or even a 150w HID

from this light you are going to get no real luminousity...

find an actuall 100 - 250w cfl and then you will get some lumens (enough for maybe 2 sqare feet

I think this ebay seller is purposely misleading and the heavy duty looking hood is meant to reinforce that

re-read the sticky CFL tutorial for a fuller explaintion - I have found it extreamly helpful in avoiding this kind of confusion http://www.greenpassion.org/f22/cfl-tutorial-2592/

and here is another tutorial I liked http://www.littlegreenhouse.com/guide3.shtml

These are actual watt cfl's not equivilent, as you can see they are a bit more expensive then the ebay

These CFL grow lights are available in 125 watt models. The 2700k bulb provides increased output in the red spectrum which promotes flowering and budding in plants. The 6400k bulb is full spectrum bulb which promotes overall plant growth. 125 watt bulbs are 9,500 lumens. Average life span is 10,000 hours. Requires mogul fixture or socket and 110/120 volt outlet. Size 14" x 4"
Regular Price $70

http://homeharvest.com/hydrofarmcompactfluorescents.htm

the ebay add does clarify it is talking about equivilent watt, but not well and I think it inflates the already paltry lumens

I wish I was wrong I would love to get 500cfl watts for that price

I would be cautious. The website for the store was thrown together in 5 minutes, and there is very little useful technical information on the bulbs. Also, the most powerful part of using cfl's is that you can have many small light sources surrounding a few plants that will evenly grow. If you just want a few huge cfl's, you would be much better served buying a small HID light.

I am an optimist most times, but remember, you get what you pay for.

I started my grow using a 65w CFL(500w)6500k Flood fixture I purchased from Home Depot for about $45.00. It worked OK (plants needed more saturation)These are good if you want to relocate the ballast. The high wattage CFLs from home depot or lowes with a mogul base will not work without a ballast.
Lowes does have a 65w(300w) medium base bulb that is self ballasted but it is soft white 2700k (great to bloom with)

you don't need a whole ballast, though they are nice, just a mogel socket adapter for less then 20 quid
Mogul Socket Adapter
The mogul socket adapter allows you to screw a compact fluorescent grow light bulb into a standard light socket. Simply screw a compact fluorescent light into the mogul socket end and screw the adapter into any standard household light socket.Mogul Socket Adapter
Price: $14.95 qty:
