| As Fredfarted was the only one with an alternative to hydroton, and as a DWC'er (although i'm an admited newbie) and a current user of hydroton, i thought i'd mention something i've been hearing about on another forum and researching on my own. it's called 'hygromite' and it's supposed to be better than hydroton in several ways, it doesn't float, it's ph neutral, it ratains twice the moisture that hydroton does, it's reusable and it's supposed to be much easier to clean. the down side is that it's considerably more expensive. anyway, heres some info. Higromite is a silica based mineral rock mined from the cascade mountain range. When the volcano's ashes landed in a fresh water lake, after it set and dried it was then mined. It is then kiln dried and made into small rocks, similar to hydroton but has silica and mineral value. It is 100% organic, and will promote much finner, bigger, and healthier roots. It comes in 20 Liter bags. Can be used by itself, or mixed with other mediums like rockwool, coco, or soil to create custom mix. As with all mediums, you need to soak or wash the rock to get all the dust and particles off to create a more clean and stable medium. Detailed Product Description HigromiteTM provides the gardener and hydropincs grower with much more precision in watering and management of nutrients. In side-by-side studies with other mediums, plants grown in higromite exhibited more compact growth, improved stem length, quicker establishment, better bloom breaking, improved leaf expansion, better head size with shorter inter-nodal spacing, and an increased overall yield. Higromite contains a significant portion of soluble silica. Silica is essential for healthy plants and roots. The crystalline mineral silica is an often forgotten element in agriculture. When plants contain enough silica, they are able to maximize energy resources from the sun. However, it can only be absorbed gradually by the plant via the microbial processes in the soil. Thus, it is important to feed the soil a rich organic diet. Your plants will receive this slow release of silica from Higromite resulting in healthier, more robust plants. Plant available silica has also been shown in studies to stimulate SYSTEMIC ACQUIRED RESISTANCE (SAR) in plants which increase their resistance to disease. Capillary Action: The wicking action of Higromite ensures that the whole root system can take advantage of the water and nutrients you give it. You can even perform your own test to watch water being drawn 8 inches from the bottom of a vessel to the top in a very short time to prove the lateral and vertical movement of the moisture. Micronutrients: Higromites composition is predominantly silicon dioxide, which allows the rock to slowly release silica to the plant, which is particularly important to cell growth. The remaining elements release other micronutrients beneficial to the plants overall uptake of nutrients to stimulate root growth and formation of blooms. __________________ i hope this helps anyway, toke amongst yourselves bozo, peace, love, dope | ||||||||

| Hey KYBud - Did you start your seedlings in rockwool first, then put that in the hydroton like DWC does? Just curious GG
