Rep Power: 17 | | Transplant Concerns!!! Hi all, Today I decided to transplant my girl. She was in a red SOLO cup since birth. The growth has been quite slow and I was becoming concerned because although I would water her every few days, she would dry up super quick and start looking for water again.
I cut the cup and accidentally sliced a root bottom because when I pulled off the slice I heard a couple faint snaps, like roots just tore..
Like the newbie I am, I was doing this transplant in my backyard with a bit of sunlight so I sketched and went inside... I finished up but along the way I feel like I may have screwed up. Once the cup was off, the soil was loose and started to fall apart. I tried to cup it but to no avail. I ended up placing the rest of the root ball in the hole that I was having sooo much trouble planting into (because soil kept falling down in my hole).
The actual transplant was done at around 9:30a.m. and I returned at 7 p.m. to check on her... I will post a pic of her in the new duplex...The new transplant is in the Crystal Geyser container...
From the looks of it, I might have escaped...no harm no foul..
Should I introduce any nutrients as they have been growing for about 15 days now? If so, what would you all recommend?
I really appreciate all the info I have received on this site.. It's nice to be able to rely on experience and inexperience at the same time to assist me in my success...
Cheers,
Six

hey there.. good work. all it needs now is a good watering after transplanting and then just let it sit.
in reality if a bit of root is broken theres no evil done. dont introduce nutrients just yet. on a side note, you should have mixed nutrients into the soils (manures etc) before the transplant. another note for next time.. the plant was pretty small still to be transplanted anywhere, and thats the big reason the soil kept falling apart. the plants root system wasnt extensive enough to hold it all together. next time give it another 2 weeks or so.
ok. now just sit back and watch it grow.
as a last note. i never transplant in the morning. the reason i dont is that the hottest part of the day is still to come and this overly stresses the plant as it has to adapt to a new environment, recover from transplant shock and survive a hot day. if you transplant in the late evening. it does all that during the doolness of the night and any watering doesnt evaporate at night. by morning the plant should be fresh and upright (sometimes plants bend and wilt slightly after transplant as the roots try to adapt and search for water...)
poeace. good work.

You got the skinny on that, sweetie....No food for a few weeks, then 1/4 strength...wait till the roots start coming out the bottom holes before transplantling...also, water well the day before, late in the day, till water comes freely out the bottom. This will keep the soil from falling apart and ripping the roots. You should be able to Turn the plant upside down, with the plant between your fingers, wiggle or squeezed the container a bit, and it should just slide off. You should not have to cut the container. Fill the pot so that when you put the new plant into it, it is at the right hieght, then add soil around the edges, using your fingers to firm it, but not pack it down, then you do not have to keep a hole in the middle but build to the hieght of the plant...and then water until the water freely comes out the bottom. concentrating mostly around the sides as this will force the roots to the edges of the pot and encourage new root growth.
You will be fine.
Peace

there are nutrient additives that help to relieve transplant stress, I personally use superthrive, it only takes a couple drops per gallon and works like a champ every time. I even use it if the plants just look a little weak and it always works well for me.
