You should really check into cfl faqs on this board rather then deciphering which person on here is correct with their math.

Some people seem to write responses that sound like a credible answer but it's really based off no research whatsoever. Larger CFLs give off less heat per wattage.

So what is the advantage of using say 10 26watt CFLs rather then one large 96watt? A better advantage over being able to "spread the light more" is that CFLs have a tendency to break/explode. If you have one large CFL lighting all your plants and that thing breaks somehow you are shit out of luck. All of your plants will lose light and then you have to go buy another expensive bulb to replace it. Having a bunch of smaller bulbs in case one breaks (one of mine broke) you can easily have backups or rely on the other bulbs until you get a replacement.

As for people saying you cannot compare CFL lumens to other types here is where I give my opinion. Why does a CFL package always have a comparison with incandescent lighting to show the wattage you are saving and showing how you can get more brightness out of less bulbs? Incandescent and CFL are two different lighting methods and they are constantly compared so shouldn't there be a formula for calculating the comparison between a 96watt CFL and say a 400watt HPS?
