Default I Have a small question please :)

Today would be my 3rd day.

Germinated fine, quarter inch roots ! in about 30 hours!

So i went and got my soil, Has all the good stuff in it,
(Peat Moss,Organic compost,Composted/aged Soft wood bark,Perlite,Vermiculite,Dolomitic Limestone)

Poked 3-5 wholes in small white cup's, filled the freshly stirred Soil in the cup's, watered lightly,

Set it under 2 cfl's, keeping temp's at a steady 80 degree's ALL DAY!!/NIGHT!!

2 Days nothing happined!

last night before bed, i changed the soil because it was just to damp for my comfort.( me -thinking that was the problem)

I Could see the root had grown maybe another half inch/inch on all four!

I Added another Cfl tothe fixture because i read somewhere that some seed's need a 90 degree enviroment ,rather then 72-80 degree's.

This brought my temp to EXACTLY 90 degree's , ALL DAY.
(2 bright white's, 1 soft white)

So fresh new soil, new cup's, THIS TIME , i put plastic over the tops of the cup's, Hoping to help the processof breaking soil.

As i stated earlier this is about my 3rd day.

Thursday i get a fan to put in the bottom to draw in fresh air, so as of now, i lift the lid about 2-3 times aday, or theres a screw off cap ontop of the Drum,i might leave off while im rolling one up,
And once or twice i will pick up my big box fan, open the window, and intake all that fresh air from outside into my Drum.(55 gallon)

But am i being to anxious?? I Know that outside it usually only takes a couple days to break soil.

Its been a steady 80/90 degree's in here for 3 days, and as i said, i seen the growth of the root's, but with that kinda temp for 18 hours a day i figured something would of broke soil by now!!!

I Even have a Thermometer to stick in soil and the soil is a steady 75-80- degree's,

Begginer's Anxiety?
How long does it usually take for yall's to break soil under cfl's?

Bulbs= 2 Bright White(3500K) and one Soft White (2700k)

I Can post pic's but would rather not if you guys think you can help without.

Thanks !!

i had the same thing happen to me.. it took a few days to break soil but from there on it flourished. Just wait another day or so see what happens.

also i would swap those lights out for some 6500K's that could be a reason for slow growth.

The lights make absolutly no difference until they break the surface. Do you have a heating pad? Put them on that, on low, and let the soil get warm. I bet they will pop fast then. Bottom heat works great. Also, keep the cover on them. Dark is best for a few days, till they are up, then slowly introduce them to the light.

You will be fine, just first time parent nerves!

peace

So i could turn these lights off??,
as long as the enviroment around it keeps the soil 70'/80'degree's?

Or do i mis understand you?

Yes, that is correct. Even if you put them on top of your frig, in the dark, even with a few sheets of newspaper on them, they will get warm from the top of the frig and germinate.

And do the lights slowly then, as they poke their little heads up. Also, how deep are they? No more than a 1/4 inch is good.

there about half a inch down , but its kinda losely covered.

Thank's so much! I Learned something new today

When they do break, and im at the stage of adding light,

Instead of 6 or 12 lights,
start with 2 or 3?

as growth sprouts, add more to fit?

Sound Good?

Yes, you are correct. Add the lights slowly. You do not need the whole flotilla for a few seedlings. Add them slowly and keep them as close as you can, once they green up and are used to it. Don't burn them though. Put your hand under the lights. If it is just warm, comfortably warm and not baking, then you are good to go.

Good luck sweetie.

Do you know the strain/mix% of the seeds you are growing ?
As I understand, only those strains that come from the equator need 90* temps.
I'm sure those who are more experienced than me can answer this point much better.

Yessir' , Instructions came with the seed's . But im Growing Blueberry from BC , if that helps.
Any advice would be appreciated!

Richard- As far as the Drum, It's a 55 Gallon Hard Plastic Drum. Made to with stand up to about 500 degree's heat. What was in it before hand was a liquid product we use at work, but i cleaned it out VERY good, twice and hand dried it, let it air dry for about a week in a clean place.
and also it is lined with Foil Tape.
