Exclamation how many CFl's do i need to match a hps

I just started my first diy rubbermaid DWC bubbler. 10 gal organic
nutes with jamacain bat gauno. I cant wait for the results. Right now I have 2 cool white floro's 2 warm white and 2 residential for
a good spectrum and so far so good, but I want to flower.
Obviously cost and ventilation issues are my biggest problem,
I will be using a Scrog method to utilize the most of the light.
So I wanted to know how many CFL's would I need to flower
6 plants?

Yes they deserve to die and i hope they burn in hell!!!!!!!!!

I can't say for sure but cfl's put out more heat watt for watt compared to hps, fact. hps is far superior to cfl's for budding, fact. Either way you are going to need proper ventilation, fact. Those are just some things to think about.

This is quoted out of a book i have: Plants have five basic needs. Each one amounts 20 percent of a plants ability to grow to its maximum potential. When all of these needs are met at the maximum, the result is maximum growth (20% x 5= 100%)! If one of the needs arrives at only 15 percent, all growth is impaired equally (15% x 5= 75%). If two or more of the basic need are not met, growth slows quickly. Even with the best hydroponic system money can buy, in a garden where relative-air humidity is 80 percent when it should be about 50 percent, growth will be limited. The dollars and high hopes invested in a hydroponic system can easily be 'dashed' in a cloud of hot, humid air.

Air 20%
- Temperature
- Humidity
- CO2 and O2 content

Light 20%
- Spectrum
- Intensity
- Photoperiod

Water 20%
- Temperature
- pH
- EC
- Oxygen content

Nutrients 20%
- Composition
- Purity

Growing Medium 20%
- Air content
- Moisture content

BTW welcome to the site

Hey man, I have a grow going right now in a rubbermaid. I just used six bulbs, 30 watts, 2000 lumens each. You just need to switch from daylight/cool white bulbs to warm white bulbs when you switch over to flowering. If you want to check out how I did it, the link is in my signature. I will have new pics up later tonight.

you might as well invest in an hps, if your going to try to match the lumen output of one, you are going to spend more money in the long run that way as CFLs have a much lower lumen per watt ratio. And a nice 400w hps bulb or a nice MH bulb can offer a much more balanced and appropriate spectrum than mixing up CFLs can, and will cost you less to operate. IMHO

well to match a HPS with CFL you face a really basic problem: a HPS gets you 150lum/W in 2700K - a CFL only a max of 100lum/W (realistic are most CFLs in the range 60-85lum/W, only the big CFLs get the 100lum/W)
so based on this calculation you would need 1.5 times more real wattage in CFL at least to match a HPS in its output.

Exclamation Thanks

You guys really know how to help a newbie out, after seeing the results and type of buds people get from even a 250w Hps I might
as well just get a 400w and do it right the first time. Ill use the cfl's
for veg (6500k I did my homework) and us the hid for flowering.\
Again my peoples thank you.

A simple revolt of the masses the very deliverer of such chaotic passage, deadly to the conformist a culture born upon us the projenators of the seedless diety to which we pray with sugared lips
Sinsemilla we bow to you.

Sounds like my setup... 6500k cfl's for veg and hps for flowering. FYI i seen some 42w 6500k cfl's at home depot the other day. When i was out cfl shopping last year i couldn't find the 42w 6500k cfl's anywhere. I only seen the 42w ones come in 2700k, so i bought the 27w 6500k cfl's to veg my plants. I bet those 42w 6500k's would work pretty darn good.

To be quite honest though, i am trying to get away from the cfl's for veg due to lack of coverage/intensity. Right now i am running 8 X 27w cfl's = about 216w/12,800 lumens. It can barely cover 10 small palnts, and i have 12 vegging. :O To keep it short a 250w MH is about 23,000 lumens and would cover all of my plants nicely and then some.

Good luck with which ever route you go.
