Rep Power: 48 | | CFL ScrOG - Noob's 1st try
yo
introd myself in that section. copied this from what i wrote there (but updated):
- starting with bag seed, all I had; 14 popped, 5 females
- homemade reflector holding 10-100w CFL (16k lumen; day & soft mix)
- 2.5' x 1.5' (3.75 sf) grow cab (105 cfm muffin fan exhaust; passive intake thru floor; 2-deskfans to stir the ladies; around 80 degrees, 60% hum)
- continuous-feed nutes delivered to each lady with adjustible drippers (GH flora series, but starting using lucas formula)- 5 gal nute reservoir (maxi-jet pump; air pump & stone); been sticking to 6 ph or slightly lower and around 700 ppm; about 80 degrees; change weekly; check daily; adjust as needed; using GH pH down only; water from tap around 220 ppm and slightly alkaline (7.5); switched to RO tap combo 100ppm neutral!
- started in 1" rwool cubes; then placed in 3.5" net pots w/ clay pellets; suspended in 2' x 1.5' x 6" deep tray (black mortar mixing type) w/ 2" of clay pellets on bottom (roots grow down from net pot into pellets; nutes drip down roots out drain back to res; try to keep light out of root zone; they are not sitting in water
- 2 weeks germing, 5 weeks vegging, started flower mode yesterday; they kept flowering though from the sexing 2 weeks back
- scrog attempt (100# mono fishing line, 2"x2" grid, 10" above soil line,
- i topped at about 4th node; each plant has about 6-8 strong branches growing nicely and bushy; i've been either cutting fans that are in the way in half or off (haven't noticed any issues); I'm starting to top the tallest shoots so to even out the canopy, let others catch up;

Rep Power: 48 | | what to expect from CFL twists?
now that 12-12 started i'm really curious what to expect from my cfl twist bulb lights.
currently using 10-1600lumen 23w (230w/16klum total) mostly 2700k (soft/warm) w/ couple 6900k (daylight): about 4300 lumen/sf
i've read that 5000l/sf is most light that can be used w/o co2...right?
so am i safe to hope these lights will produce nice flowers - not airy and weak (if i dont mess anything else)?
does more lumens mean more usable light lower on the plant? or do fluros just not penetrate like hids? in other words are a hid lumen=fluro lumen?
think i remember light only penetrates 10" or so of growth. about right?
is there a better lighting option anyone recommends? i also got a 250w hydrofarm mh lamp just collecting dust, but it gets hot and the temps are around 90 even with exhausting, lense. was thinking of maybe getting hps conversion for flower.
appreciate to hear what you guys think... |

Stinkypickle,
Welcome To GreenPassion!!!
First Thing We Need To Work On Is Getting The Temps, & Better Air Exchange, In The 90*ezz Will Really Stunt Your Plant & They Won't Want To Grow For Ya.
The CFL's Will Grow Some Bud, How Big Or Quality Will Depend On Many Other Factors & Skill's. As Far As I Know Lum.'s Are Lum.'s, You Are Right About Penetration, HID Will Penetrate Deeper Into The Foliage, But With That Said, That Is Where Side Lighting Can Come In To Play, So If You Do Have a 250w.MH You Could Use It For Your Main Light & Your CFL's For Side Lighting, But First I Would Concentrate On Getting Your Temp's Down & Go From There.
Well, Hope That Might Help Ya Out!!!EH!!!
Cheers`;`Hatch`;`

thanks hatch.
temps and ventilation are only a prob with hid. i tested the set-up with the hid before starting and temps and humidity went up (more water evap from res.)
normally temps are 78-80 lights on, 70 off; humidity consistently around 50%
hasn't been an issue without hid.
just remembered that i had a different exhaust fan (a simple clip fan) when originally checked temps with hid. I should prob recheck temps with hid with this fan now (105 cfm muffin fan with dimmer on low). i could always turn the fan on max to try maybe adjust temps with the hid to acceptable temps.
tropical weather here outdoors

Sounds Good, It's Worth A Try. I Have All My HID In Cooltube's They Are 1000watter's, I've Got 665cfm Axial Dayton's Pushing & 400cfm To 800cfm Squirrel Fans Pulling, & I Can Get Right Down On The Plant's. Just Something To Think About.

They Are Looking Great, Everything Is Working Good, Only Suggetion Is More Light, It's Not A Must, But It Would Help.

thanx hatch.
really wish i could do something different with the lights but gonna stick it out wit twists for this one. what u think bout trying one conversion mh-hps wit the 250 fixture lying around doin nothing? another 75 bucks+.
by my calc: 14 x 1600 lumen (23w 2700k) is about 4500lumen/sf. i can get them within 2-3 inches from canopy and keep temps and hum perfect (80f 60%).
when the lites came on, i found 2 more gents tonite. only 3 ladies left...but it's perfect - they were diff strain and taking up room anyway. all ladies are the same i think and doing wonderful, they should take up the space in no time.
my nutes have been stable around 600ppm using the lucas formula w/ <100ppm h20 (ro+tap). ph perfect. i feel real lucky to not have to deal with swings everyday.
this drip, single chamber hydro set-up has been interesting. everything's been great. jus kinda hard to remove all the roots of the males been pulling. hope not a prob. otherwise the roots coming out are nice and tan and smell healthy. they're in the dark in a bed of clay and the water drains out the chamber quick. 5 gal res gets recirculated all day and nite - must be 100s times a day.
Planning a 12 hr ro water flush next change + heavy hand watering.
1 week into flower and i'm impressed with the bud sites. scrog is a lot of work but rocks. i lucked out wit getting a good strain from bagseed.
my fingers and crossed and i'm excited to see this thru. *have faith*
i pray no bugs, molds, over nuting...
thanx all for having let me creep behind the scenes and benefit from your experiences and advice!

Ya Bro, This One Is A Male. You Might Want To Look Around Before You Put Very Much Into This Grow.

it could still be a good grow considering he`s using the scrog method but alot more work spreding the remaining plant or plants across the screen.but then who know how much that will help considering he`s aready into flowering.

Thanks Hatch, Fields.
I put that pic up of the last males before being removed from chamber.
should have been more specific, that post it was in mentioned 2 less males, 3 fems left.
the macro shot i took came out clear so thought i'd post a nice pic of what you don't want to see.
thanks for the encouragement.
based on what i've read on scrog, 2-2.5 oz/sf is possible. that'd be awesome. i'll be stoked with even a few grams/sf though (not really). keeping my fingers crossed.
i'm a little confused as to when to stop the training. 10 days into flower only, but some tops have slowed while other smaller shoots still sprout up thru the screen. How many days in should i leave it to just growing vertically? from what i've read, stretch might happen thru day 20-30, longer?. i don't want only popcorn nugs, but i also don't want the canopy more than 6, 8 inches max above screen (for max light penetration on all flowers).
guess i'll just keep my eye on them.
when should i expect them to start taking more nutes up? i am still keeping ppm around 585-600 and at 585 it stays there, 600 it starts to increase as water is sucked up/evaps. should i just keep going based on what the reservoir is doing? the ladies are looking good, no obvious signs of anything bad.
for better yield: are additives really good? which ones the best for hydro recirculating small res? i'm using gh nutes (micro bloom lucas formula), should stick with gh flower boosters? when to start those?
opps jus started rambling off my thoughts...
just get so excited.
thanks

I've never done a scrog grow. But would like to someday. Looking forward to your progress.
Happy Growing!

You Can Keep Training Alot Longer Ten 10-Day's, They Will Keep Growing For 3 Or 4, Better Weeks, Just Keep Working Them Back & Forth In The Screen, & Moving Towards The Outside's.
They Are Looking Great, Glad To Here You Had The Male's Under Control.
Keep Up The Good Work.
Cheers`;`Hatch`;`
