i tried getting both of those products here in NZ, the socket Y splitters as well as the adaptors for plugging straight into a power board. i was told by multiple electricians and electrical supply stores that they were made illegal here about 12-15 years back under some industry regulation that forbade use of them as a fire/electrical hazard when some other standard was changed.
i'm guessing australia and nz have the same or at least very similar electical industry standards and guidelines, so likely illegal there as well, would explain why amazon won't ship there.
just a guess..

Been flowering under a 400wMH for about 3 weeks but figured my light was underpowering my space so i wanted to get another like. $200 was out of the question atm for a 400wHPS so i looked into CFLs.
Yesterday i rigged a setup "light bar" consisting of 3 of those 3bulb light bars with Y splitters using 23w CFLs, for a total of 18 23w CFLs for 414w.
Ill be using it as side lighting for flowering to supplement the overhead MH which looks very blue (standard generic MH that came with my setup). For 1/3 the price of the HPS i cant complain plus it gives me side lighting for better penetration...
my question is was this a decent investment? ran me ~$80 and was thinking maybe once i get some $ doing this again for another side of the grow but not sure if this is the best idea....any thought?

high man, as someone who grew under just that kind of set-up for almost
2 years, i'd have to recommend you either spend the extra for T5 HO's as
they will give you better penetration than standard CFL's plus, they use up
much less head room. ...not only that but they generate less heat.
here is a couple pics of my old set-up and the new T5 HO i bought for my
new veg box, ...it's only 4x24watt bulbs for a total of 96watts and my
moms are growing faster than i need, lol, i have to toss cuts every week!
(right now i'm vegging under 96watts of T5 HO and flowering under 300watts of HPS)

thanks bozo...
well i already have the 18 lights set up soooo the T5 option doesnt really help me atm. plus i already have the 400wMH running as well.
i hadnt really planned on running side lighting but figured the ladies needed some redder wavelengths and my ladies are at different heights so didnt want all the tallies gettin the light, greedy b*tches.
plus was thinkin that if i ever move up to another light i could use the CFLs around the house or something...

lol, no man, i wasn't suggesting you dump what you already have, i was
answering your questions, lol, first, very definitely yes, you made a good
investment, my CFL's provided me with more weed than i could smoke!
and no, lol, instead of doing it again, save the money you would have spent
on weed and go with T5's the next time as it is a better option than
standard CFL's.
for example, my T5 is a 4 bulb 2 footer and it cost me, after taxes, about
$135.00, definitely more than the $80.00 you spent, but not much more,
so, when you are ready to buy more lights, go with the T5's, lol, you won't
be sorry.
CFL buds rock, lol.

CFL buds rock, lol. | bozo...thanks again for the info...question for you....
what is the heat difference between the T5s and the CFLs. with all 400w of CFL goin it was hard for me to stay under 85deg(was around 92 for a few hours with the dehumidifier in room so removed the dehum. and it dropped to bout 86) with the 400wMH going too. so i dropped the CFLs down to just 200w and im staying at 84/85deg.
just trying to figure out what adding a third side of lights would do. i think in the winter time when the basement temps are far lower i would be able to run more lights but would still like to keep the heat down.
any info from ur experiences would be awesome!! |

GE labels the lower color rated CFLs as "soft white." I just find that out the hard way. Well back to the store I guess.
