I like the setup very much, but I gotta be the devils advocate on this one, as it seems to obvious to me, why did you do with so many CFL's?

I mean 550 watts of CFL lighting? You could have gone with a 400 watt HID light, and produced many more lumens, thereby creating bigger and better buds?
Peace
I'm restricted on ambient temps in the bloom room,It's in the "attic" and cooling the room has proven to be a challenge. But I have resolved that issue and will convert my room next spring. You're very right about bigger & better thats what I want too(and cheaper on electric bill also)

Dude, technically you are correct. However he is mimmicking the sun better this way.

At the risk of starting another argument, personally I am more interested in lumens than temp, I veg under a 400 watt HPS, and have been for years, and it works great for me. A side benefit for me doing it this way, is there is no adjustment period when I switch from vegging to flowering.
Peace

Please correct me if I'm wrong as I'm new to growing as well.

jonny, how do cfl's help with the ambient temp?

they produce more heat per watt than HID
many people confuse heat per bulb and heat per watt
400w of CFL will be hotter than 400w of HID in almost every case
only the individual CFL bulb seems cooler, not the total heat of all the bulbs

Hey Johnny, since I seem to be on a roll today, starting arguments where I seem to be, I think you would find that one 400 watt light would put out less heat than all those CFL's do. Even less heat than a 600 watt light too.

The only trick in either case is cooling, I run dual 400's and you can easily touch them, and they are very cool to the touch, I use cool tubes.

I tried vegging once using CFL's and when I touched the bulb, I got burned.

I think if you research this, you'll find out that the CFL's do put out a bit of heat too, in fact more.
Peace

Hey videoman no argument here as I only use a 400HPS for veg and flowering. Well I'm lying as I did use CFL's until the plants got a decent size.
Looking at the graph in my previous post, chlorophyll activity is low at 3500K. I would think using lights that pump out the color that has maximum chlorophyll activity is a logical choice. Therefore I would think swappin' the 3500K's out is a good choice.

In the end does it matter if a person uses CFL or HID? No, what matters is they and the plants are happy and producing quality bud. From the research I did the single 400W HPS was the best fit for my needs but everyone takes their own path.

peace,
R.

I answered this and just as I was about to click on submit reply my power went out,it came right back on and as soon as I got back in and started typing it went out again.
Sorry this took so long,
I had a slew of CFL's left over from a conversion job I did so I built out of what I could get my hands on at the time.

I used to have 1 200w and 6 42w cfls, thats over 500 watts. They added up to about 26,000 lumens, but there was a lot of heat, the 200 being the worst. My room was always around 82 85 degrees. Now I have a 250mh thats about 21,000 am able to use a cooltube, and room temps are now about 71 in the morning and 75 in the afternoon. My plants seem to grow just as fast with 5000 less lumens, and they no longer get heat stress. If i was growing 1 plant a cfl would be great but I think any thing more than 1 or 2 plants deserve hid's. Thats what I think.

I find cfl's hot. I had to shut my big contraption with 6 cfls in it down, and just use my t-5's for veg. I still have one 4 light bar of cfl's working for side light and that is handleable. It was also the weather outside and of course it made everything warmer when it was hot. In the winter it might be fine. And I do have good ventilation. My plants where stressed under them though. Even with 4 fans moving the air and no door on my veg spot.
