Default 2nd grow, 1st SMART one... input plz

Okay, all you who said "Ask," here I am. The pics are only so-so as I don't have my good cameras here, so I used my media player combo thing... Anyway, to be fair to you all, I should explain what's up, what I did, etc., and then I am all ears.

Okay, so these ladies (I hope) are the two survivors and seem healthy for 2 wks, don't they? I lost the tags somehow so they're either Lemon Skunk or the recent Thai Super Skunk Attitude freebies. I have WW on the way, feminized... and will start a diff thread for that.

They'd be taller but when I up-potted (God, sounds like puking!) I brought the soil up to the ... cotyledons, right? So anyway, they look appropriately bushy to me. The first, Shirley (I think positive!), got these yellow spots (no broad yellowing) and started curling leaves like a cigar wrapper. The pH is 6.6, nutrients were in balance 2 wks ago, I no longer overwater, a fan is blowing all the time, etc. So, I decided (opinions, plz) that it must have been too close to the new 125w CFL (with reflector) -- the curling AND spots led me to that. Sound right? I moved it to 3-4 inches away.

Maxine (#2) is very healthy. There is an amazing amount of new internode and branch-at-stem growth. She gets about the same wattage as Shirley, but from three 42w/6500k CFLs with one 36w/2700k CFL to the side a little. Shirley has that 125w with reflector above her, with a 36w/2700k CFL to the side a bit, too. Humidity is in the acceptable range, air exchange is good...

Am I going through the right troubleshooting thinking here? And for my next step, should I pot up at 1 foot or so to a 3 gal, then once more after that to a 5? Or just go to a 5'er? They're in 1's right now, 6" pots.

Final question: FF or other flowering food? What's the consensus? Don't kick me out the club if I go to a 150w HPS plus one each daylight and warm CFL, as I think that's a decent flowering approach for two plants.

I am here to listen and didn't mean to yak so much. I have no problem being wrong, so let me know if I am. The only problem with being wrong is STAYING wrong, I figure. BTW, lifelong libertarian here, professional writer and BMI composer/musician. And my intake? 1/16th a month. Honest! Friday and Saturday nights only. If I do it when the sun's out, I just fall asleep! What a lame, eh? Anyway, thanks in advance. I won't diss any other sites, but I got the best welcome here, and here I plan to ... put down roots! Ha! Thanks, all. ATTN: Charles Lynch faces 100 years when he goes for his twice-postponed sentencing in L.A. in June. Support this good brother!

Default "in progress"?

In my control panel it lists the pics and says they're "in progress" whatever that means ... I will connect to them another way ... In the FAQ it refers to "an arrow" next to the Attachment Icon that will list theses, but I have no such arrow ... One of the things I do is websites, so it's not like I'm lost, but everything works a little different everywhere. Maybe pics have to be approved? cached? sent to D.C.? Dunno... I will use a URL back to my own site and FileZilla them there right quick...

I'm not really qualified to answer your questions but, you said one thing that I might add my two cents to.

Quote:
And for my next step, should I pot up at 1 foot or so to a 3 gal, then once more after that to a 5?
In the short time I've been growing, I have found it much simpler to know when to repot by using these containers.

A 16 ounce Beer Cup, from seed until it gets to be around 4 inches tall or, 3-4 nodes high.
I then transplant that into a 2 liter pop bottle cut away just under the crown of the top. Because the bottle is clear, you can see the root system through the bottom of the bottle. When the plant reaches about 12 inches in height, the root system is equal in length and should be bottoming out about this time.
At this time is when I transplant to the container I will finish flowering in.
I have found that the size of the pot is determined by the eventual height of the plant. Not only are you providing new space for the roots to grow strong but, the pot and it's soil will act like an anchor, preventing the plant from falling over due to being top heavy.

If the plant is going to finish at 3 feet, it's not necessary to use a 5 gallon pot but, if the plant is going to grow 5-6-7 feet tall, you best have a good, heavy base to support it.

I hope my experience will help you in your growing ventures.

Default thanks (twice)

I guess I hit the THANKS button right ... but thanks again, Richard (it is Richard, right?) ... Mr. Owl? or Mr. Mirror? I didn't catch the name convention there, perhaps. But I really REALLY like your method of potting. I say that after having lurked and studied and read for a good six weeks before trying a second grow (first one was in 1970), and much of the best thinking from the various potting methods is contained in your simple method. Plus it's inexpensive! I know there are no photosensitive cells on the roots (sure, they can bake if you fry 'em, though) so the clear plastic is a great idea to add another dimension of info.

I gotta get that other camera over here. I have no zoom, optical or otherwise, on this multimedia device. (Great device, by the way, plays and records video, takes avg photos, has music for mp3 play, voice recorder, etc., with a 20GB hard drive and fits in your hand.) But I know I need to get better pics up. For the future readers, Shirley's leftmost leaf shows the mottling/spots I'm talking about. Although the haven't appeared on the upper newest growth, the curling inward really does seem heat related, so I moved her (still being an optimist) another couple inches away. The 125w 6500k CFL has a white reflector (Daystar, I think) so I think that caused at least the curling. Nutes were spot-on 12 days ago ... these are the right size for about two weeks, aren't they? Maxine seems particularly healthy.

Thanks to all!

Sure, looks plenty bushy for 2 weeks. And they don't look like you're killing them yet, so you must doing something right, hehe.

I got those same seed with my last order (thai/skunk), you put yours in the ground 8 days before me. Hopefully, they will be good to us.
