On Saturday I put my freshly cut buds into my jug with at least 4 X's the amount of water.
This morning is day 4 and my buds are still floating on the top and I have not seen any change in the water color. The water does smell when I'm changing it.
Does this sound about right/normal??
Thanks! |

What temperature are they at Bluey? If they are in a cool place, it might take longer. If the water smells, that is good. It means the impurities are coming out. And if your nutes where organic and/or you flushed really well before harvest, it will not have a bad smell. It is the impurities that make the smell.
You are still good to go, buddy.
Peace

Peace | J, they're at room temp and I use the cold water from my tap.
I did use organic nutes and started flushing 10 days ago.
Unfortunately the smallest plate I have to cover the buds and hold them under water, blocks/covers the jug opening. I'll remove this plate once the buds sink to the bottom.
If the buds don't sink by day 7, should I continue for a couple of more days or just take them out & dry them?
Note: I bought a dehydrator.
Thanks & peace always!!!

I can ring in on this if you want.
Not to worry they will sink after the first couple of days.
Here's a pic of my water cured smoke out in the sun to dry.

I see that you placed the whole stem with buds into your cooler. I wonder if that helped to sink them???
Thanks!! |

Absolutely Bluey, it is way easier than clipping the nuggets and trying to sink them. Perhaps if you took a regular strainer, kitchen type, and put it atop your pot, upside down, to hold the pot beneath the water. Make sure the slick on top of the water gets poured off. Those are the nasties you want to rid your self of.

To keep the buds underwater, I have to fill it to the top and then place the plate on top of the buds; keeping them underwater.
Thanks for your tips and I'll use the whole stem next go around!! |

I see that you had you buds drying on a screen out in the sun. Doesn't direct sunlight reduce the THC? |

hey bluey I see wb and jangel have you covered....
I have tried a bunch of different methods with water curing.....don't worry about them not sinking....I have had some buds that won't....could be the hollow stem of some strains like mazar....I am not sure why some do and others don't. But I have found no noticable difference if some buds float.
I am interested that the water smelled so strong in an organic grow....my water smells pretty good with a change every 24 hours.
The most important thing to remember about water cure from my perspective is that you can't mess it up
warm water or cold water as long as you start with clean water that you wouldn't mind drinking and change it, its all good..but keep in mind that most chemical reactions happen twice as fast for every 10 degree increase in temp.
3 days to 7 days of curing, same thing its all good I find most are "finished" in 5 days
enjoy your water cure with that very cool blue bong (I think poppa smurf had one like that)
one potential problem though - I wouldn't put my buds in the sun to long....high temps and strong light tend to degrade the canabinoids that get you high into something less desireable. Consider drying in a dark cool dry place with perhaps a strong breeze from a fan. Some folks use a dehumidifier on the lowest setting if it has a setting that keeps the temp very low....I hang my buds in a mesh bag in a dark closet for a day or two with the fan on high...that seems to do the trick.
p.s. as you may have already found out...when they dry they will be much smaller and darker than usual - that is good and you have not lost any potency - just extra water soluable stuff that doesn't get you high and will make the smoke harsh

Rep Power: 2340 | | Thanks bro!! You answered my questions.
The water doesn't smell "strong", but it smells of pot leaching through the water.
The water has been clear since day one. It's kept around 78 degrees. Water changed daily. etc, etc
I bought a 425W dehydrator and I'll set it on low.
It's such a simple process, but like anything new, you go through the curve.
Peace!! |

A few cranks with the salad spinner to get rid of the majority of the water then it only takes a short time to dry. I have dried it the same way with a fan blowing over them and they were dry enough to smoke in 3 hours or so

the THC and 90 degrees isn't gonna hurt you. I dried them both inside and outside with no difference in the quality of smoke. Quote:

Rep Power: 2340 | | WB ~ I replaced the plate with a SS veg steamer basket. This should provide enough air/vapor to escape.
