Rep Power: 25 | | whitish gunk on roots, DWC
In one of my reservoirs all the roots have this whitish gunk clinging to the roots, its all over the airstones too. It seems to wash off easily enough, and the plants seem reasonably happy. Is this something to be concerned about?

GH 3 part, same as in the other rez's. I'm swapping out the rez and cleaning everything with H2O2 now.

clean out all rezs with water and h202 (you can use bleach if you want but make sure to clean it very well). lower your rez temps, make sure that NO LIGHT is getting into the rez. i had this problem a few weeks ago using GH 3-part. I cleaned everything out and put in some h202 into the new distilled water. make sure to wash your plant roots too! you can clean the whole rez, but if the roots still have the spores on them it will come back EVERY time! Also i bought "Dutch Master Zone" which is a preventative for these kinds of problems (especially if you have some higher temps that can cause this slime/algae growth). ive been using Dutch Master Zone for a few weeks now and no slime has come back.
if the problem persists there is one way to fix totally, you just have to be very careful. a product called 'Physan 20'. which is a strong mix that you only put your plants in for like 10 minutes then clean out everything with distilled water. but supposidely it kills all the bad stuff and protects the roots. good luck!
oh yeah also: and easy way to tell if slime/algae spores are starting to/do exist in your rez is if you have strange pH fluctuations. usually its a very large jump in pH over a short period like half a day or so. when i had it my rez jumped from 5.7 to 6.4 in a matter of hours. a strong dose of H2O2 helped, but only for a little while

Thank you, that was an awesome response. I have 6 rez's, 2 in the veg room and 4 in the flower room. I am having heat control issues in the veg room, and this wierd gunk, but no prob's in the flower room. I think you nailed it with this being temperature related, I will try Dutch Master Zone. Thank you!
I'll post pics of my DWC setup soon, I'm just a little paranoid right now, this close to harvest.

if its the temp, you can look into buying a rez chiller (these are very expensive). alot of people use frozen water bottles, which can cool your rez several degrees for a few hours. only problem here is that you need to make sure to clean the outside of the bottles very well each time, and to keep a constant low temp you have to be changing the bottle out several times a day. im too busy to be changing bottles in my DWC, so i got the Zone and i'm going to add CO2 to help the plants deal with the higher temps better (mine around 80-85F).
to help with the slime immediately, get a spray bottle, mix a 10% H2O2, 90% distilled/filtered water solution, and spray down the roots. use fingers (cleaned/with gloves) to wipe off the slime down the drain, and spray some more of the mix on to try to get everything off and destroy as many of the spores as you can. :-)

That Dutch Master Zone is good sh_t!
I tried the whole shakedown cleaning bit, including the roots of all the plants, and the spooge was growing again within a couple of days. I threw in a dose of the Dutch Master Zone last night and its actually looked kind of soapy and bubbly for a while, I was concerned. Within an hour though the roots were looking so fresh... so clean.
Thank you DieAbetic!

Bump. With the latest rez change this has completely eliminated the problem.
