Question Question about Oxy-plus strength 50% - Rockwool Pre-Soak

Hey guys,

I know this might have been asked a few times, there's been lots of discussions regarding this I know, but I have yet to get a certain answer so don't mean to sound like a broken record, just this stuff can mean life or death for plants if you over do it...

From what I know there are 3 different strengths of oxy-plus (H202) which are 17.5%, 35% and 50% and there are alot of different guides for sterilizing rock wool cubes for cuttings.

Alot of cloning tutorials say 20 drops(2ml) of oxy-plus per Litre of water and PH adjusted to 6.0 with 1ml superthrive to make up pre-cutting soak water.

Problem is, It doesn't say which strength of oxy-plus being used in any of the guides i've seen it just says "20 drops/2ml oxy-plus Per/L"

I am about to make up 40 cubes for 40 cuttings in my terrarium and will be making up 10litre of soak solution using 50% H202.

So what I was wondering if any of you peeps have experience using 50% H202 for making up soak solution for your rock-wool solution, would very much appreciate if you could enlighten me about ratios per/L for said strength of Oxy-Plus.

This is my Soak-water ratios that I have thus far, but just want to confirm that it will be suitable for my new cuttings.

- 10 Litres Fountain Spring Water
- 20ml 50% Oxy-Plus (H202)
- 10ml Superthrive
- 1/4 Strength Bloom - Hy Gen

I will be soaking these overnight then transferring to my Terrarium maintaining 70% Humidity on Heat mat With thermostat set to 25c under 28w Cool white flouro.

Let me know what you think guys, thank you in advance for your help.

I was told to soak my rockwool in 1-2ml per Liter of 35% H2O2. If using the 50%, I would cut back the solution to 10-15ml 50% H2O2 for your 10 Liters of water. Make sure you are controlling the pH, rockwool when soaking can raise it for a period. When I first start the soak I aim for 5.5 knowing that it will raise in the near future. After that I use pH-Down to keep it at 5.8 constantly for at least 48 hrs. Hope this helps! Good luck

Hey Bigbudz,I dont use rockwool any more cause of having to chase the PH all over.I use rapid rooter plugs now they are ph stable from the start. When I did use rockwool I would ph the water{distilled water} and add a drop of super thrive and soak the cubies in it.Then I would squeeze out the water and soak them in Plain PH water and squeeze them out gently and they are ready to use.I did set the PH low around 5.5 in both waters.Using H2o2 you kill off all bacteria, the good bacteria in the cubie and on the roots that you are starting. Some of the root starter nutr has a ton of micro bacteria and some cleated mirco's and bacteria that the plant needs to grow. The H2o2 will kill all that off.The only time I use it is if there's a problem with root rot and sometimes well water.Give the distilled water a try as I said and see what you think.Peace

Hello
I agree with tokecrazy. All products that use hydrogen peroxide will kill the beneficial enzymes & bacteria that are hugely responsible for a faster breakdown of nutes & faster foot development which snowballs into more bigger buds. Basically it kills the good stuff that you're buying & administering to help it grow. Kind of detrimental.

You can use Oxy, (or the bottled peroxide at the dollar store, diluted), in the beginning to sterilize, but no more .

I use a Botanicare product called Hydrogaurd. It's a biological water treatment for soil or hydro, aero, etc. You can check their site to read more. no peroxide

Hope this helps.

enjoy
