I use fish tank stone for ebb and flow. I always fear telling people because they tell me I'm doing it wrong, and should get the expanded clay, but I have had really good success with it so far. not sure if it's cheaper, but it is a lot easier to go to walmart and pick up fish tank stone then it is to go to a grow shop. I flood once an hour for just long enough to fill then drain the table. 4 minutes to fill, 4 to drain.

Is what you have causing any problems?

I use both Rockwool and Rapid Rooters (preferred), as well as Hydroton in the 5" netpots.

Iso -no probs just wondering what others are doing. This is my first hydro grow , so I'm always looking for something better, or just reinforcement that what I'm doing is right.

okay I have a flood n drain table and not sure as to how and how many plants to load it up with, its 2x4...do you just fill the net pots with hydroton? (probably what i'll be using) or table and pots? I got about 60 jiffy peat pellets will they work in the hydroton?

Great post good info for a newb to flood n drain.

it's easier to clean and move plants around if you use pots rather then putting the media right in the table. I wouldn't use net pots unless you have some kind of lid that the pots go in. the roots will grow out of the holes in the pots and it's not good for them to see light. the pellets will work, but you can either water by hand or with a top drip system for the first few weeks until the roots are grown out into the media.

i use 6"square mesh bottom pots filled with Diatomite,or hygromite, any type of silica stone and clones rooted in rapid rooters or rockwool cubes. i do handwater until the roots make their way down, but once they get there, roots just seem to love the silica stone. and i use the GH 3part nutes in lucas formula, 8/16 micro-bloom.
