Rep Power: 104 | | Help me Indentify this Hydro System...
I'd like some of the experienced growers to take a look at this short YouTube video. It interested me because I'm trying to make some decisions on how I plan to grow. Would this system be a hybrid of DWC & Ebb and Flow? http://www.youtube.com/user/GreenHandMembers
I like the idea of Ebb and Flow without having to worry about the additional space of keeping the res below the table. What I wonder about is the third net pot on top of the unit. Why isn't it being used for a third plant? Is this to maintain/change res water or something like that? I notice a tube is going into the pot which makes me think he's also using an air stone.
One final question, Is there an air stone in this system also and is it a constant/continuous drip irrigation (24/0) or do you think the system is on a timer? Just trying to figure out some things I'm not all that familiar with.
I appreciate the help,
-the Corsican.

Hi there,
I think it is a dripping system, at the end of the video when he is removing the plants, he removed the drip lines from the pots. I do not see an ebb and flow system here, and to be able to say it is a combination of DWC and drip you have to see the inside of the rez (I see an air line but I do use an air pump too and I do not have a DWC system)
I hope this can help you
Peace

So Ebb & Flo is based on flooding and not dripping? Okay, makes sense. I wonder what happens when the roots grow out of the net pot and reach the water? Will there still be a need to drip feed the plants?

Hey What's Up!!!,,It Look's Like A DWC System (that will have airstone's in the res) With A Drip System Incorporated To Feed The Baskets, While The Light Are On The Drip System Will Run Continuously, And When The Light Are Off The Drip System Will Need To Come On Every Third Or Fourth Hour To Keep The Root's From Drying Out To Much.
You Would Just Lift The Lid Up Or Off To Do Maintenance & Res Changes.
Really Don't Know Why They Weren't Using All The Sites With Plant's???

-the Corsican. | Ya The Roots Will Grow Through The Baskets & Into The Water, But Yes You Would Still Want To Run The Drip System.

Yes, that is right. Ebb and flow systems are based on flooding.
About your second question, it would be better if a DWC expert help you with that. But in my opinion, it would be ok if the root touch the water while you have your air pump on, as the roots will be recieving water and air all the time (that is why it is named Deep water Culture). You have to remember that the main part (heart) of the root is in your medium, hydroton
Hope this help you
Peace

Right on, thanks to both of you.
Now all I need is some viable seed and not schwag bag seed!

There are plenty of threads in GP with good seed banks info. But I have read many growers who use bag seeds with outstanding outcomes
Peace, and best of luck

Hey "Corsican",
I only used 2 of the pots because only 2 seedlings actually made it. If you check my Youtube channel I have a new grow with 3 going.
So Hatch hit it right on. Nice job dude.
Its a drip system. I have a long net spread across about 8 inches from the bottom of the baskets so that the roots are not fully submerged or get caught up in the pump. But since the roots do touch the water, I added an air stone. The tube you see in the "3rd pot" is connected to a fish tank pump.
Pump is on 24/7. My roots seem to like it.

Haha!
It's cool to actually talk to you and great that you wound up being a member here. I really like your setup the most out of all the setups I've seen thus far (and I've seen a lot). You should really post your video so other people can take a look at your system.
How are those seedlings doing now?
Thanks for the excellent information and I agree with Hatch, you should start a thread to help educate all of us beginners around here.
-the Corsican.
P.S.,
Don't know how I missed the picture of those plants, nice job.
