Common earthworms do the trick for me. Cheap, reliable and free fertilizer (worm castings)!

I use perlite. I know it is not cheap. I have even heard of people resuing it. I grab a bag every time I am in wally world. My supermarket used to carry it but doesn't this year. Everytime I used to do groceries I would grab a bag. Doesn't hurt as much that way! LOL!

If you got dirt, they'll live there.
Worm farmers - yes, there is such a thing - raise them on old newspaper.

Seems like such a cramped little space tho, you could put one in a tiny cup and it won't get lonely?? What if they fall out of the cup?

They won't leave.
I got some small ones by accident once. I had them for over a year. I don't have any now. But, I wish I did - and my soil isn't compacted.

The worm story's made my day,
I have a mixed soil of organic and non so will worms live in a mix of that?

Wow, shipping that much these days? I have not bought anything for a while...don't remember what I paid...didn't seem like that much but it may have been. I was pretty desperate the last time I bought it, and bought a bunch. Can't find it in stores for some reason. Good luck!

Just go to walmart and get it for under 5 bucks a bag. I would never waste my money on shipping it. That is atrocias!
I don't think it matters if it is coarse. i would prefer it not course as I use it alot. And it is better smaller for cloning.
And I do not think it is a good idea to put worms in plants inside. Okay, I have had a worm farm before. for a few years. but not in your plants. Others might disagree, but no.
Peace

I wondered what that ment
extremely or shockingly wicked, cruel, or brutal: an atrocious crime. 2. shockingly bad or tasteless; dreadful; abominable: an atrocious painting;

This time of year I had a hard time finding perlite. Wally world was sold out. Found 8 pound bags at lowes for 4.00 a bag.
