Rep Power: 39 | | There are some tiny little flies/gnats in my grow...
Will they destroy my crop? I've only seen one... Maybe I'm luckily that I saw it before it got really out of hand?
What should I do?
I really need some kind of home remedy if possible, since i've spent my entire budget (and then some).

Sounds like fungas gnats. i will come back and add some links for you.
They can be a pain, but not usually fatal.

one, if you wait too long youll start seeing hundreds. and yes they can potentially destroy the crop. they hatch larvae that eats at the roots.
there are various remedies. from using a layer of fine grain sand on the soil, to some other chemical remedies. i used alcool to some effect. and there are sticky plastic things that glue them...
follow jangels links

Rep Power: 500 | | Adding a layer of sand or pearlite about an inch thick does help, but the primary cause of your troubles is over watering. Fungus gnat larvae thrive in wet soil.

in the middle of first grow. using a drip hydro. seen gnats since the start. been using the sticky fly trap paper rolls, got 3 up. hundreds of little gnat bodies tells me it's doing its job. haven't experienced any probs thus far. they appear to be kept under control - sometimes there are none flying around, other times i see one sneak its way into my reservoir or tray.
sticky traps help and are cheap

Thanks for the link jangel... I thought it was a dead link until I looked at it a little closer. There were no results because it was a search for fungas gnats.
fungus gnats came up with a few though.
Are the larvae aquatic, or do they like the wet soil? I'm wondering because my grow is kind of hempy, with a little water in the bottom for about a day after I water- but I don't have to water again for a week. (I do a mild foliar spray with a little coffee, extremely light-duty nutes (1/4 tsp of 20-20-20 in about 32 oz of water) and carbonated mineral water 1-2 times a day. It keeps the humidity right, the plants seem to like it, and makes everything smell like coffee.

Yes, they like it damp and the larvae are in the soil. If you lay pieces of cut up raw potatoes on the surface, the larvae will go in them, and that way you will have an idea of how many you have. Also, neem oil works well on the adults as well as sticky traps and SM-90 helps in the soil to kill the larvae.

Could I just put something like landscaping cloth over the top of the soil? Or would perlite work better? Since the adults are pretty harmless I think I'll just go after the larvae and eggs...
Hey if it fails, the worst thing that will happen is i might not get as many chives.
