Default Question i have not seen asked or answered in Faq's

Hey Gp i was asked a question by a friend today and i was stumped can u help me out? what is actually the best type of plywood to use for a cabinet that wont warp from moisture and become molded. He wants something cheap and will last?
i said osb board because they use it outside for garages and sheds in all wheather. so i thought that would be best but im not really sure and this is as cheap as i think you can get $6 sumthin for a 4x8ft i think he would just need extra support beams to prevent the weight from breaking boards what do you all think or surgest hes not worried about how the board looks

cement board is used in bathrooms and is quite resistant to those sorts of things. You can paint regular wood with something that will seal it from moisture/mildews. I would be looking for things used in bathrooms mostly.

I would recommend a coat of water based primer to seal out moisture, followed by a coat of mildew resistant white paint.

Just get exterior grade plywood. That will resist water and hold up well. Then paint it like 695 said....Good luck!

I have heard... That you need to use a laquer based primer for your first coat on osb board. Otherwise toxins will leach out from the osb. I am guessing it would be from the glue used or whatever it is used for making the particle board.

Plywood would be your best bet.

Osb will swell just from moisture.

i'd use a nice bright white oil based primer to make sure it's good and sealed

not a fan of latex primers because i have had issues with it not sticking to some materials that well

Hey All,I chine in here I'm a carpenter and that OSB in my opinion is crap.It gets wet and it will swell three times it size. The glues they use are toxic and you have to seal it up good. Now days wood cost you to much.I would get this 11/32 or 3/8" plywood at home-depot for about $9.00 a sheet. You still have to build a frame to help support it.If you use 3/4" you don't have to build a frame to support.Prime the wood with a primer and then paint white with a good flat white paint. Drywall screws work very well when building a cab or box. Here's what you need, not that OSB crap.Peace
